Prince Charles and Princess Diana‘s marriage was anything but perfect. While the Princess of Wales wanted nothing more than to feel loved by her husband, Prince Charles neglected her needs throughout their union.

But the most disturbing element of their tumultuous relationship was when Diana hurt herself in front of Prince Charles. Instead of tending to his wife during her desperate cries for help, all he would do was shrug her off. He even went so far as to claim she was “faking her problems.”

Princess Diana once threw herself down the stairs while pregnant with Prince William

During Princess Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles, she felt like a prisoner. Not only did her husband ignore her as though she were invisible, but he was also madly in love with another woman. Because of this, the Princess of Wales felt completely isolated and alone.

In an anguished plea for help, the desperate Princess once threw herself down a flight of stairs while pregnant with Prince William.

According to Diana’s biography, Diana: Her True Story In Her Own Words, the queen had a more appropriate reaction to the incident than her actual husband. “The Queen was the first to arrive on the scene,” the book reveals. “She was horrified, physically shaking with the shock of what she had witnessed.”

Meanwhile, “Her husband simply dismissed her plight and carried on with his plan to go riding.”

“They were messages of complete desperation,” the book reveals of Diana’s self-harm. “‘Please, please help.’ In the first years of their married life, Diana made several suicide bids and numerous threats. It should be emphasized that they were not serious attempts to take her life, but cries for help.”

And during one tragic cry for help, Princess Diana “picked up a penknife lying on the dresser table and cut her chest and thighs.” She did this in front of Prince Charles when he refused even to acknowledge her presence. Even though she was bleeding in front of her husband, Prince Charles thought she was “faking her problems.”

According to her book, Diana would later tell her friends, “They were desperate cries for help. I just needed time to adjust to my new position.”

According to People Magazine, a source close to Diana claims that Prince Charles told his future wife that he didn’t love her right before their wedding night.

“One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was that the night before the wedding, Charles told her that he didn’t love her,” her close friend Thornton said. “I think Charles didn’t want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her, and it was devastating for Diana.”

Thorton added, “She didn’t want to go through with the wedding at that point. She thought about not attending the wedding.”
