We know Adam Levine best for the work he’s done as Maroon 5’s frontman, but he’s also been a major player in the development of The Voice. Back in 2013, he visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about all of his accomplishments. And it seems he added creating a celebrity fragrance to the list.

Unfortunately, Ellen DeGeneres had to call Levine out after Levine once stated how much he hates when celebrities create perfumes and colognes. Here’s what happened.

Adam Levine shared his fragrances with Ellen DeGeneres on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’

Levine achieved superstardom thanks to his band and his participation in network TV. But he’s certainly not finished branching out. He developed his own fragrance back in 2013, according to New York Business Journal.

“Both fragrances were shaped by Adam’s discerning nose, while the bottles and packaging reflect his particular aesthetic sensibilities,” ID Perfumes Chairman and Chief Executive Ilia Lekach explained. “This debut fragrance collection is everything a signature scent should be: both a portrait and extension of the brand itself.”

That same year of the scent’s release, Levine shared his celebrity fragrance with DeGeneres while visiting her show. He created a cologne for men and a perfume for women that he seemed ultra-excited about.

“Is this relatively new?” DeGeneres asked Levine at the time. “It just came out, right?”

“It came out a few months ago,” Levine verified. “And the man’s, women can wear too. Because it’s not so overly-manly.”

DeGeneres roasted Levine for claiming he’d never create a celebrity fragrance

While Levine is certainly proud of his fragrances, DeGeneres took the opportunity to roast the celebrity for creating perfumes.

“While I’m smelling it, I’d like you to read this tweet that you sent out a little while ago,” DeGeneres said on her show while handing a piece of paper with one of Levine’s tweets printed on it.

“Yeah, this says … it’s from my Twitter account, March 5, 2011,” Levine starts. “And it says, quote, ‘I also would like to put an official ban on celebrity fragrances. Punishable by death from this point forward.'”

“You changed your mind,” DeGeneres carries on after embarrassing Levine. “People change their minds.”

“Yeah, money’s a powerful thing,” Levine admitted.

“It smells good, though!” DeGeneres attempted. “It does, it smells very nice. You shouldn’t be ashamed of that.”

“No, I’m down with it!” Levine added. “Are you kidding me? I love it.”

It seems money was the driving factor for Levine getting into creating a celebrity fragrance — and we can’t blame him. While DeGeneres may have embarrassed him by introducing that tweet to him during the promotion of his product, fans commented that they loved his sense of humor.

“At least he is honest about money being the reason for it,” a fan commented on the clip.

“Let’s be real. A lot of people would sell out if it meant getting millions of dollars in the end,” another added.

“Ellen is awesome for busting him, but he handled it well, I think,” another wrote. “He was honest and made fun of himself, in a way. It was quite funny.”

We’re glad there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between Levine and DeGeneres despite this awkward moment. And we’re sure Levine sold plenty of bottles of perfume to make the embarrassment worth it.
