‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’: Ellen DeGeneres Wants to Know if Harry Styles’ Album Is About a ‘Breakup From Someone’
Harry Styles has become totally adored by the public for years. While the singer attained superstardom thanks to being a major part of One Direction, he’s now taking the solo route with his music. And he created several smash hits on his 2019 album, “Fine Line.”
After the release of “Fine Line,” Styles visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about the album. And DeGeneres is wondering if Styles wrote the album in the wake of a breakup. Here’s what she shared.

Styles has attained even more fame post-One Direction, as he’s releasing hit after hit and starring in films. Back in December 2019, he went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about “Fine Line,” and the audience went wild for the soft-spoken Brit.
“It’s gonna be No. 1 this week,” DeGeneres said of Styles’ album. “I’m telling you guys, if you haven’t heard it yet, it is so good. It’s amazing. I’m so happy for you.”
Styles then explained that he went to Japan by himself for a month to help him write the album. While he had a few friends, he said the new environment with fewer distractions helped him create the music. “Even, honestly, being away from all your friends … for me, it’s just about focusing on that one thing,” he shared.
The singer also admitted he was worried if the album would be well-received from One Direction fans. But it seems he had nothing to worry about.
DeGeneres joked with Styles that his album was about a ‘breakup from someone’
Plenty of great art is created from heartache, and Styles has had a number of public relationships over the years. When talking to DeGeneres, DeGeneres wanted to know if “Fine Line” was also created in the wake of a breakup.
“People are saying — some people are saying — word on the street is that this album is all about a breakup from someone,” DeGeneres told Styles on her show.
“OK,” Styles responded.
“So the question is, is it?” DeGeneres asked.
Styles didn’t give a direct answer after that. But he did give some more context regarding how the album was created.
“I think I definitely write from personal experience,” Styles explained. “I think a lot of people do. I think if you want your songs to be honest and connect with people, it’s usually from writing honestly. It’s definitely about what I was going through at the time — and that’s both good and bad.”
Styles appears to be single now
Once “Fine Line” was released, fans were convinced Styles was creating music about Kendall Jenner. While the songwriter has multiple famous exes, he was spotted out with Jenner during the summer of 2019. And many famous celebrity hosts have poked fun at Styles and asked him which songs on his album are about Jenner. So far, it looks like Styles is remaining quiet on the topic.
So, are Styles and Jenner an item now? It seems Styles is single now. And he’s talked about his gender-fluid style choices since the album release, too. But when asked if he identifies as a straight man, Styles doesn’t understand why anyone needs to know.
“It’s: who cares?” he told The Guardian. “Does that make sense? It’s just: who cares? … I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool. And more than that, I dunno, I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun.”
