‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’: Matthew McConaughey Awkwardly Joked He’s Happy His Wife Doesn’t Want to ‘Change’ Him
Ellen DeGeneres seems to have a great relationship with actor Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey has visited The Ellen DeGeneres Show a number of times, and he and the comedian have talked about everything from his family to award-winning movie roles. And during one interview, McConaughey mentioned he loves that his wife, Camila Alves, doesn’t try to “change” him.
Here’s what McConaughey had to say and what fans thought about it.
Matthew McConaughey has visited ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ a few times
McConaughey seems to enjoy talking to DeGeneres, as he’s visited the set a number of times. Back in 2016, DeGeneres brought up how the actor was on the cover of People Magazine and was “the No. 1 reason to love America.”
“That’s really quite an honor that you’re the No. 1 reason to love America,” DeGeneres joked. “It’s one thing to be the sexiest man alive and all the titles you have, and all the awards you’ve won. But to … it’s all on you, my man.”
DeGeneres then joked that she’s coming after McConaughey if the “country starts falling apart.”
McConaughey laughed off the jokes, but he also went along with DeGeneres’ quips. “Hey,” he said while pointing to the magazine and back to himself. “No. 1 reason.”
“You’re the No. 1 reason to love it!” DeGeneres added.
McConaughey mentioned he’s glad his wife doesn’t want to ‘change’ him
The conversation moved on from the People article and on to McConaughey’s home life. DeGeneres mentioned she’s sure his wife, Alves, and their children all agree with what the article had to say about him.
“You’re a great dad and you’re a great family man,” DeGeneres added. “And so, whatever your titles are, you’re a great dad and husband.”
“I do my best,” McConaughey noted while the audience clapped. And he then made a joke about Alves that didn’t appear to land.
“We’ve got three healthy kids, 8, 6, and 3,” he started. “Wife doesn’t want to change me. That’s a hell of a deal.” After little audience laughter, McConaughey added, “I don’t wanna change her. We respect each other, and we’re doing the best we can.”
“That’s all you can ask for,” DeGeneres added amongst audience claps. She then changed the subject to what McConaughey’s kids want for Christmas — and he explained one of his sons is definitely on the naughty list this year.
Some fans found his wording to be awkward
McConaughey seems to have a great relationship with Alves. The two married in 2012 and have talked about what’s made their marriage so successful.
“[We do] a lot of staying at home, cooking together, or getting a hotel room that is 10 minutes away from the house,” Alves explained to Us Weekly in 2018. “Just the fact that you don’t have to wake up to kids screaming for help with something — it already does something to a mom’s brain.”
It seems some of DeGeneres’ fans are questioning McConaughey’s comment, though.
“Lol he said, ‘Wife doesn’t want to change me,’ and literally no one laughed … because the entire room is filled with women,” a fan commented on YouTube.
“Is it just me or does he seem weird in this interview,” another fan wrote.
McConaughey and Alves appear to still be going strong. And we’re sure we’ll see McConaughey on plenty more magazine covers in the future.
