New York City Comic Con 2021 saw The Expanse cast and creators announcing the premiere date of The Expanse Season 6, and sharing the teaser trailer as well. Fans of the hit Amazon Prime Video scifi series can expect to see the crew of the Rocinante back on their screens on December 10, 2021. In the meantime, here’s a look at the trailer for The Expanse Season 6, and what to expect.

‘The Expanse’ Season 6 — what to expect

Amazon released a breakdown of The Expanse Season 6 alongside the trailer. Suffice it to say, the entire human civilization is erupting into war. As the OPA’s Free Navy continues to wage war against the UN and the MCRN, odd political activity and dangerous research are taking place in Laconia, past the slow zone.

“The sixth and final season of The Expanse picks up with the solar system at war, as Marco Inaros and his Free Navy continue to launch devastating asteroid attacks on Earth and Mars,” Amazon revealed.

“As the tensions of war and shared loss threaten to pull the crew of the Rocinante apart, Chrisjen Avasarala makes a bold move and sends former Martian Marine Bobbie Draper on a secret mission that could turn the tide of the conflict. Meanwhile, in the Belt, Drummer and what’s left of her family are on the run after betraying Marco. And on a distant planet beyond the Rings, a new power begins to rise.”

The Expanse Season 6 will be six episodes long and will star Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Wes Chatham, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Cara Gee, Frankie Adams, Keon Alexander, Nadine Nicole, and Jasai Chase Owens. Cas Anvar has been fired from the series following sexual harassment allegations.

‘The Expanse’ Season 6 teaser trailer breakdown

The trailer for The Expanse Season 6 was short — about 40 seconds of actual content. It involved a voice-over from Avasarala discussing the difficulty of loss and continuing to fight amid loss.

“We’re broken. Trying desperately to keep ourselves going by pretending we’re not. We must remember the lives we’ve lost. The pain we’ve suffered. Because with every new attack, Inaros’ power grows,” Avasarala says.

In the trailer, Holden takes over piloting the Rocinante and tells everyone to brace — neither Bull nor Alex appear to be present at first blush. Next, we see Drummer slumped over in the pilot’s chair of her craft, with the hull punctured by several large-bore holes.

Next cut, a drone floats over NYC, recording video of the metropolis, which is smoking. The sky is a bleak grey, and has been partially flooded thanks to Inaros’ attack. Avasarala is briefly seen standing in a room stacked with UN body bags — assumedly the aftermath of the attack on Earth, or perhaps combat with Inaros’ faction.

Then the trailer shows Bobbie Draper in her Martian power armor, walking down a catwalk. The background suggests she’s walking in the slow zone. The trailer cuts to more meteors hitting Earth from space — either additional attacks from Inaros or a cut back to the past attacks. It’s not clear which, but Avasarala’s voice-over does mention “new attacks” during that scene.

Marco Inaros rallies some Belters of the Free Navy, and then hands his son Filip Inaros a gun.

“You and I are meant to be out here. In the darkness, in the fight. That’s who we are born to be,” he tells his son.

Things are getting weird on Laconia

The Expanse Season 6 trailer shows that the Sol system isn’t the only focus of the coming season. Something unsettling is happening on Laconia, past ring space.

The trailer cuts to Laconia, where the rogue Martian element fled to using the rings. This is the same planet Sauveterre tried to leave for during “Nemesis Games” in Season 5, before being destroyed by the Unknown Aggressors. In Laconia’s atmosphere, Ring Builder space platforms can be seen, and the signature blue flash of the protomolecule is visible as well.

The trailer cuts to a young girl comprised of protomolecules, and then the Rocinante firing at something, and then ends.

Fans have a lot of drama, action, and intrigue to look forward to. It will be interesting to see the protomolecule make its return, and to see how the UN/MCRN try to hold off the Free Navy. The Expanse Season 6 will make its premiere on Amazon Prime Video on December 10, 2021.
