‘The Family Chantel’: Chantel Reveals the 3 Reasons She Doesn’t Trust Royal’s New Wife
On the season 2 premiere of TLC’s 90 Day Fiancé spin-off, The Family Chantel – featuring Chantel Everett, Pedro Jimeno, and their respective families – Royal Everett, Chantel’s oldest brother, introduced yet another in-law into the mix. Royal returned to Atlanta with a new bride, Angenette, in tow.
Like Pedro and Chantel, Royal and Angenette (who’s from the Philippines) met online and went through the K-1 visa process in order to get married. But it doesn’t look like their similarities brought Chantel any closer to her sister-in-law, at least not at first. On the October 12 season premiere of The Family Chantel, Chantel revealed that there were several factors that led her to question Angenette’s motives.
Angenette was too ‘quiet’ and reserved for Chantel’s liking
On the first episode of The Family Chantel season 2, Chantel revealed that Royal returned from Texas, where he was working and going to school, with more than just a degree and some additional work experience. The 32-year-old also had a new wife, 23-year-old Angenette, whom he met on Facebook.
But Royal and Angenette’s age difference made Chantel take pause, as well as their major differences in personality. While the 90 Day Fiancé star claimed her older brother had always dated women around his age, many of whom shared his interest in music, Angenette couldn’t have been more different.
While Chantel admitted that Angenette was “sweet,” she claimed she was too “quiet” for her to read.
“I just wish she’d open up to me a little more,” the star of The Family Chantel lamented.
What’s more, Angenette’s introverted nature – even during a raucous girls’ night of drinking and dancing at the club – made Chantel question what she might be “hiding.” She even worried that Angenette might be dishonest, like her sister Winter’s ex-boyfriend, Jah, who hid one of his children from Winter until the family hired a private investigator.
“Every time I’m around her, I try to talk to her, but she’s shut off a little bit,” Chantel told TLC producers. “I need to get to know her more. I don’t want another situation to happen like it did with Winter and Jah.”
Ultimately, the extroverted Chantel just didn’t seem to appreciate her sister-in-law’s tendency to be meek and reserved, especially in response to her brother’s demands (about how much she should drink and how she should wear her hair, for example).
“When someone’s just observant and not really active in a conversation, it makes me feel like she’s hiding something,” Pedro’s wife argued.
The ’90 Day Fiancé’ star insisted that Royal and Angenette got married too quickly
Angenette’s withdrawn personality wasn’t all that bothered Chantel about her brother’s relationship. While Chantel and Pedro also used a K-1 visa, they met several times in Pedro’s home country of the Dominican Republic before tying the knot. They also waited several months after Pedro arrived in the U.S. to get hitched.
By contrast, Chantel explained that Royal visited the Philippines only once before he declared his love for Angenette. In fact, Royal proposed to his younger bride during his very first trip to her home country.
Royal’s sister complained that she “knew nothing about Angenette” until she was engaged to Royal “all of a sudden.”
What’s more, Angenette and Royal got married just a week after she came to the U.S. Chantel didn’t believe that was enough time for the couple to truly understand each other.
“That’s time that they missed out on to see if they were even going to work out the way they expect,” the 90 Day Fiancé star insisted.
Chantel argued that Angenette might have been ‘fishing for an American’
After Pedro and Chantel attended a birthday party for Royal, Chantel’s suspicions only escalated. Through a conversation with Royal, Pedro discovered that Angenette was the one who first reached out to Chantel’s brother online – not the other way around.
This revelation left Chantel “worried and concerned.” She told The Family Chantel producers she wasn’t sure if Angenette just wanted to “use” her brother for a visa.
“Sounds like she was fishing for an American,” Chantel mused.
Chantel ultimately hatched a plan to suss out Angenette’s true intentions by getting closer to her.
“I don’t feel like she’s showing her true self,” the 90 Day Fiancé star said of her new sister-in-law. “I think she’s just trying her best to make a good impression on my mom and dad. I feel like I need to get closer to her to protect my brother.”
And it certainly didn’t seem to end there. Previews for later episodes suggest that the drama and distrust between Chantel, Royal, and Angenette only got worse during a family trip to the Philippines to meet Angenette’s family.
