The ‘Funny’ Way Prince Harry Teased Prince William When They Were Kids, According to a Royal Insider
Not unlike many siblings, Prince Harry reportedly used to tease his brother Prince William. The way he annoyed William, however, was a bit different from the way most children pester a brother or sister, according to one royal insider.
Princess Diana gave her sons as much normalcy as she could
Prince Harry and Prince William grew up in the royal way, though their mother, Princess Diana, made every effort to try and keep them grounded.
Despite their fame as royals, Diana was intent on giving them “normal” experiences. In the ITV documentary Secrets of the Royal Babies: Meghan and Harry, royal biographer Duncan Larcombe explained how Diana wanted her sons to have a “normal and private life.”
“Diana made sure William and Harry lived as much as a normal life as possible and as parents, William and Harry will always be influenced by their mother,” he explained (via Daily Mail). “Her desire to give them a taste of normality runs through the veins of William and Harry.”
Diana’s chief of staff, Patrick Jephson, told ABC News about the experiences she provided for her sons. “She made sure that they experienced things like going to the cinema, queuing up to buy a Mcdonald’s, going to amusement parks, those sorts of things that were experiences that they could share with their friends,” he shared.
Prince Harry used to tease Prince William, an insider shared
Despite having that bit of normalcy, Prince Harry found an interesting way to tease his brother about William’s future in the monarchy.
Princess Diana’s former personal protection officer Ken Wharfe, when speaking on Robert Jobson’s Royal Podcast in 2018, recalled one car ride where the two boys fought. Prince Harry, then age 4, Wharfe explained, “was being a complete nightmare in the back” and “William was then trying to be the good boy.”
“And then Harry, out of nowhere, just leant across nanny and said to William, ‘It’s alright, I can do anything because I won’t be king. You will be, so therefore I can do what I want,'” Wharfe recalled.
William, Wharfe said, took Harry’s teasing jab “rather gleefully” and “sort of liked that.”
He added, “As children, I always thought it was rather funny.”
Prince Harry later admitted a rumored feud with his brother was true
In recent years, there were rumors about a rift between the brothers and, in a 2019 interview for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Harry confirmed there was some truth to it.
“Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it’s under … inevitably, you know, stuff happens,” he explained.
Prince Harry continued, “But, look, we’re brothers. We’ll always be brothers. We’re certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him and, as I know, he will always be there for me.”
Part of the reason for their drifting apart, Prince Harry explained, was having their own families. “We don’t see each other as much as we used to because we’re so busy, but I love him dearly,” he noted. “The majority of stuff is created out of nothing.”
“But as brothers, you have good days and you have bad days,” Prince Harry added.
