The Good Doctor Season 3, Episode 16, likely left you feeling heartbroken for Shaun and angry with Lea. After his breakup with Carly and awkward conversation with Lea, Shaun is in a rough place. Right now, it looks like he’s without a girlfriend and a friend. Although Shaun says he’s OK, the latest events could have a negative impact on his career. Here’s why the unraveling of his personal life could spell trouble at work.

During The Good Doctor Season 3, Episode 15, Carly and Shaun decide to go out. During their outing, they bump into Lea and her date. All four of them participate in karaoke night. However, things don’t go as planned when Carly sees Shaun and Lea singing together. She later tells Shaun she noticed there was something romantic between them and she can’t be his girlfriend anymore. Carly says Shaun should tell Lea he loves her. She also says she thinks Lea loves him.

During The Good Doctor Season 3, Episode 16, Shaun tries to work up the courage to tell Lea he is in love with her. First, he labors over the autopsy of Maribel Vontane (previously a Jane Doe). He tells Carly he must complete the autopsy so he can work through the distraction of not knowing how Vontane died. After he puts the mystery of his patient’s death to rest, Shaun is able to move forward and confess his feelings for Lea.

Shaun invites Lea to his home. He then tells her about his feelings and says he wants to be her boyfriend. Lea says she loves him too, but that she isn’t right for him. “I love you too,” says Lea. “But you know me. I am selfish, and I am so, so needy. I’m a total mess. How am I supposed to just lay all of that on you?” Shaun responds by asking why she thinks he can’t handle her messiness. He says he thinks he can and then asks if she doesn’t want to date him because he has autism. Lea says nothing and then walks away, leaving Shaun alone, with a single tear running down his face.

Shaun’s heartbreak might leave him unable to do a good job at work

After Carly breaks up with Shaun, he copes by throwing himself into his work. He told his co-workers that his sudden obsession with Vontane’s autopsy had nothing to do with Carly, but it’s obvious that he is trying to work out his emotional pain and his anxiety about telling Lea his true feelings.

How will Shaun react to Lea walking away from him? There are two possible responses: Shaun could either throw himself into his work again or he could break down and become unable to work at all. If he is able to work, it’s possible his work quality could suffer. Shaun has loved Lea for a long time, so to have her say she loves him and then leave him could prove to be devastating. Hopefully, Shaun doesn’t get reprimanded for injuring a patient or worse.
