Before You Watch Season 4 of ‘The Good Place’, You Have to Watch The Bad Place Spinoff
“Everything is fine,” The Good Place with Kristen Bell and Ted Danson will be returning for the fourth and final season this week. It turns out that NBC sensed viewers’ impatience and released a surprise 6-episode miniseries featuring The Bad Place for fans in the interim.
The spinoff, titled The Selection — featuring the demon, Shawn (Marc Evan Jackson) — is set between the end of the third season and the beginning of The Good Place Season 4.
What is ‘The Good Place’ spinoff about?
The Selection is a workplace comedy about a group of demons from The Good Place and how they go about choosing four new humans to be placed into Michael’s (Danson) experiment, The Medium Place.
NBC’s The Good Place posted a preview of the spinoff featuring Jackson on Instagram with the caption, “He plays Shawn. Head over to the link in our bio to watch how @marcevanjackson and his Bad Place posse plan to thwart #TheGoodPlace.”
When the third season of The Good Place ended, Shawn was tasked with deciding on the four deceased individuals that would be apart of the new neighborhood. As The Bad Place leader, Shawn does not want Michael’s experiment to work so during the miniseries, the demons discuss the worst possible choices for these new humans.
The spinoff is written by the same writers as The Good Place so the laughs are abundant.
How to watch ‘The Selection’ with Marc Evan Jackson
Initially, when fans saw the Instagram post featuring Jackson, many were confused and began asking how to watch the spinoff.
You can watch the 6-episode miniseries through the NBC app. You also can go to nbc.com and click on The Good Place under shows.
Each episode is only two to three minutes in length so it does not take very long to binge-watch the entire miniseries.
It may be short, but it is jam-packed with hilarious one-liners. And, because it is so short, you can easily watch it again and again before season 4 premieres.
Why are the demons selecting new human beings for ‘The Good Place’ Season 4?
At the conclusion of The Good Place Season 3, Judge Gen (Maya Rudolph) agreed with Michael and Janet (D’Arcy Carden) that the point system on Earth that was used to allow entry into the Heaven-like afterlife did seem unfair.
Chidi (William Jackson Harper) hypothesized that the best way to determine if individuals can grow and become better people with guidance was to remove the outside factors in play on Earth.
In order to carry out Chidi’s idea, Michael would create a new neighborhood with four new humans that Chidi, Eleanor (Bell), Jason, and Tahani would theoretically help to become better people than they were on Earth.
This is exactly where The Selection comes in. The demons sit around a table discussing who to bring into the new neighborhood. When they are finished choosing, season 4 of The Good Place will start off with these new individuals when it premieres on Thursday, September 26, 2019.
