‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: How Many 2021 Emmy Nominations Did the Show Receive?

Nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on July 13. 'The Handmaid's Tale' received a total of 21 nominations. The Hulu series was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series and multiple acting awards. The awards ceremony will take place on Sept. 19.

The fourth season of The Handmaid’s Tale concluded on June 16 with an epic season finale on Hulu. On July 13, nominations for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were announced. The Handmaid’s Tale received a total of 21 nominations, including for Outstanding Drama Series. The 2021 Emmy Awards ceremony will take place on Sept. 19. Until then, it is anyone’s guess as to how many awards the popular Hulu show will take home.

‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ earned 21 Emmy nominations

Out of all the nominees, The Handmaid’s Tale is one of the top contenders at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. The series received a total of 21 nominations. Only three shows earned more nominations, with both The Crown and The Mandalorian collecting 24 nominations and WandaVision receiving 23 nominations. Like The Handmaid’s Tale, Saturday Night Live also acquired 21 nominations.

Eight shows were nominated for Outstanding Drama Series: The Boys, Bridgerton, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Pose, and This Is Us.

In 2017, The Handmaid’s Tale won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for its first season. Since then, the Hulu series has been nominated for the award in 2018 and 2020.

The Hulu show also received nominations for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.

Multiple ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ actors received Emmy nominations

For the acting categories, actors from the Hulu show are primarily competing against each other. The series stars Elisabeth Moss as June Osborne. Moss is the only actor from the show to be nominated in a lead actor category, and she earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Moss was nominated alongside Uzo Aduba for In Treatment, Olivia Colman with The Crown, Emma Corrin with The Crown, Mj Rodriguez for Pose, and Jurnee Smollett with Lovecraft Country.

For Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, and Samira Wiley were all nominated. The Handmaid’s Tale actors will be competing against Aunjanue Ellis with Lovecraft Country,
Gillian Anderson with The Crown, Helena Bonham Carter for The Crown, and Emerald Fennell with The Crown.

In the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, and Bradley Whitford from The Handmaid’s Tale each received a nomination. The three are nominated with Michael K. Williams of Lovecraft Country, John Lithgow for Perry Mason, Tobias Menzies from The Crown, Giancarlo Esposito for The Mandalorian, and
Chris Sullivan with This Is Us.

The Hulu show received nominations for the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards

Guest actor awards take place during the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Both Alexis Bledel and Mckenna Grace were nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for their work on The Handmaid’s Tale. The two were nominated alongside Claire Foy for The Crown, Sophie Okonedo with Ratched, and Phylicia Rashad for This Is Us.

Of the series’ 21 nominations, 11 will be shown during the Primetime Emmy Awards and 10 will take place during the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
