‘The Handmaid’s Tale’: Sydney Sweeney Is Fighting for Eden to Return
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 is finally here and fans are racing to stream the first three episodes of the hit Hulu show. Viewers who have already binged the first few episodes say the show has left them on the edge of their seat and there’s plenty more drama in store. And fans aren’t the only ones who are excited about Season 4. Current and former cast members are also thrilled that the show has officially returned. One person, in particular, is Sydney Sweeney.
Sweeney, of course, portrayed Eden Blaine in Season 2 of The Handmaid’s Tale. Described as a pious and obedient girl, Sweeney’s character was pretty hated by fans of the show at first. However, she had an incredible arc throughout the season that eventually caused viewers to sympathize with her character. Sweeney has been candid about the fact that she absolutely loved portraying such a complex character. In fact, she was such a fan of the show prior to joining the cast that she went above and beyond to prepare for her audition for Eden.
How Sydney Sweeney prepared to join the cast of ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
In an interview with Backstage, the Sharp Objects star shared that began dressing like Eden prior to auditioning for the show. A fan of The Handmaid’s Tale, she was familiar with the types of clothes that the characters would wear, so she began dressing in all grey to help get into character. The talented actor even learned to braid her hair like the characters on the show so she was even more believable as Eden.
Sweeney’s commitment to the role obviously paid off as she beat out other actors for the role. However, her time on The Handmaid’s Tale was fairly short thanks to Eden’s eventual demise. But even Eden’s death isn’t stopping Sweeney from campaigning to get back on the show. In an interview with StyleCaster, the Euphoria actor shared that she hopes that her character can somehow return in Season 4 or beyond by way of a flashback.
Sweeney wants Eden to return to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’
“My dream is to come back in a flashback,” she revealed. “I message Bruce [Miller, creator of The Handmaid’s Tale] all the time, like, ‘So…is Eden needed?’ My mom is a huge fan of the show, as well as all of my mom’s friends. I was obsessed with it. So when all of that came together, it’s still one of the greatest, most incredible moments of my life. I knew that she was going to be a recurring guest star with a really good arc in the season. I didn’t know exactly how she was going to die because they wanted to keep that vague and a secret to reveal later. When I found out, I hated Eden so much for her decision. It was a good way to go though. Because if I didn’t go, I wouldn’t be on Euphoria.”
Will Eden return in Season 4?
Clearly, Sweeney enjoyed her time working on The Handmaid’s Tale even if it was brief. It’ll be interesting to see if Sweeney’s persistence works and she somehow crops up in later episodes of the show.
