‘The Handmaids Tale’: Sydney Sweeney Learned She Got the Part in the Most Random Place
For many actors, booking a role in a show as popular as The Handmaid’s Tale is a dream come true. Not only has the show won multiple prestigious awards, but it also has a massive audience. Thus, it makes sense that Sydney Sweeney was over the moon when she learned that she’d landed a recurring role in the sophomore season of the show.
Who does Sydney Sweeney play in ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’?
Sweeney has certainly had a dynamic few years. Given her recent roles on shows like The White Lotus and Euphoria, some people are shocked to learn that she also had a part in The Handmaid’s Tale. In the Hulu series, the actor played child-bride, Eden. Fans will remember that Eden had a very intense arc on the show. While she may have started off as an obedient child of Gilead, she eventually demonstrated the ultimate act of rebellion.
But even before Sweeney was privy to Eden’s full arc, she was excited about the role. She diligently prepared for her audition by watching The Handmaid’s Tale and reading the eponymous book it’s based on. The Players Table producer even braided her hair in the traditional Gilead style for her audition.
The actor learned she got the part in the most random place
Naturally, when Sweeney found out she booked the part, she was extremely excited. In an interview with Glamour UK, the Sharp Objects alum revealed that she actually found out about the news in a pretty random spot. But despite where she was, she couldn’t curb her enthusiasm.
“I got a call from my agent in the middle of dog training classes and they said that I might want to step outside,” Sweeney recalled. “When they told me, I started jumping up and down whilst screaming. People probably thought I was the craziest person out there. I went straight back in and called my mum later from the car – I was FREAKING out because I love the show so much!”
Sweeney and her mom loved watching ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ together
Sweeney’s mom was also thrilled that she’d booked a role in The Handmaid’s Tale. The pair loved watching the show together and continued to do so even after Sweeney was cast as Eden. And while being in the show naturally shifted the actor’s experience of watching it, she still found ways to enjoy it with her mom.
“I watched the first season with my mum because we fell in love with the show together,” Sweeney shared of The Handmaid’s Tale. “Now being on it makes watching it a little different as I know what ACTUALLY goes on whilst filming. But it’s fun watching her reaction to different scenes or different storylines and I just disconnect myself from being in it.”
