‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Viewers Are Skipping Season 5 Over ‘Angry’ Elisabeth Moss Close-Ups
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 is bringing Elisabeth Moss and the remainder of the cast for more serious drama. However, not all audiences are continuing to watch the Hulu show into the upcoming season. Some previous fans of The Handmaid’s Tale are skipping on season 5 over “angry” Moss close-ups throughout the series.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 4 saw Elisabeth Moss turn the tables
The Handmaid’s Tale Season 4 took fans to some wild places. The show often teased that the lead character, June, would finally see some sense of peace. She escaped to Canada, but her fight for freedom isn’t over. Many critics and audiences praised Moss for her dramatic performance in The Handmaid’s Tale across the fourth season.
June learned over season 4 that she couldn’t simply move on with her life in Canada. She had a duty to her daughter, Hannah, as well as the women who lost their lives seeking freedom. The Handmaid’s Tale established at the end of season 4 that June will likely face consequences for her actions that could prove quite difficult for her to shake free of.
Hulu viewers are skipping season 5 over ‘angry’ closeups
A Reddit sub-thread explained that they will skip The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 because of Moss. She goes through a full transformation in her performance, but not all of the show’s viewers like her performance in the show. The original poster explained that they only made it through half of the fourth season before stopping because of the lead actor.
“The close-ups early on felt impactful but it felt like by season 4 it was every scene with June ended in a close-up of her angry face for way too much time,” the Redditor wrote. “And then today I see a post of season 5 coming. And guess what, it’s a pic of close-up angry June face.”
However, this particular Redditor isn’t alone. Several former viewers of The Handmaid’s Tale won’t be watching season 5 as a result of Moss’ facial expressions. Another Redditor said that they couldn’t even make it through the second season because of it.
Another commenter wrote that they stopped watching during season 3, which caused them to dislike the actor in other projects.
‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 5 finally has a release date
The official Twitter account for The Handmaid’s Tale announced the release date for season 5, which includes pictures of Moss and Yvonne Strahovski. The show will finally make its return to Hulu on Sept. 14. This also provides the first look at the new season that audiences get to see. The first image showcases Moss with an “angry face,” as one Redditor put it. Meanwhile, the second image shows Strahovski in mourning attire, likely for her late husband, Fred.
The Handmaid’s Tale will further explore the dynamic between Moss and Strahovski’s characters moving forward. As a result, these two characters share the first two images released to tease the upcoming season.
