The Humiliating Reason Why Jessica Simpson Couldn’t Date Certain Celebrities
Jessica Simpson has made quite the career for herself. The sultry pop star has several hit songs under her belt, along with an incredibly successful fashion line and a best-selling memoir.
Yet back in the early 2000s, Simpson’s long list of achievements wasn’t the only thing keeping her in the spotlight. Her perceived “ditziness” was also the subject of many magazine headlines. And while Simpson admits in her memoir that she was ok with playing the “dumb blonde” role for the public, it was still rather hurtful to never be taken seriously. According to Simpson, she wasn’t allowed to date certain celebrities because their publicists told them that they would no longer be “respected” for being linked to her.
Jessica Simpson was ok with playing the ‘dumb blonde’ role
According to Simpson‘s recently published memoir, Open Book, she didn’t have a problem with being perceived as ditzy by the general public. Why? Because it only heightened her stardom.
“Yes, these were all legitimate ditzy moments,” Simpson writes. “I didn’t care if people made fun of me because we were pulling in nearly three million viewers a week.” (Simpson is referring to her hit reality TV show with former husband Nick Lachey, titled Newlyweds.) “People who had dismissed me as a Britney-bot now heard me in a different way. Being the butt of the joke ironically gave my music credibility.”
Still, despite her ditzy persona helping her career, it did nothing to help her personal life. In fact, it ended up destroying several of her relationships.
Why the pop star wasn’t allowed to date certain celebrities
While appearing as a guest on The Drew Barrymore Show, Simpson discussed how several relationships she’d had in the past had never been made public. And according to the “Irresistible” singer, this was because her dates were advised to “stay away” from her.
“I felt like any time it started to get a little bit serious, like I was the person to run from because every guy would be listening to their publicist being like ‘stay away, stay away. You’ll never be a respected actor. You’ll never be a respected musician if you’re dating her,'” she explained. “But that was, you know, back then. So at least that was the excuse I heard.”
Who has Jessica Simpson dated?
The southern songstress has been in several high-profile romances throughout her career. Yet her most notable relationship was with the former 98 Degrees member, Nick Lachey.
Simpson was married to Lachey for three years, yet the two divorced soon after. And while Simpson found that she could move on quickly since he wasn’t meeting her needs, Lachey spent a long time being heartbroken.
He revealed his heartache to Rolling Stone in 2006, (via US Weekly) claiming, “It breaks my heart that I couldn’t make Jessica happy. I wanted to be everything to my wife. I wanted her to look at me with love in her eyes, the way she did at the beginning, and have her feel like I was the most wonderful, awe-inspiring man on the planet. And when that stopped, it was the worst feeling in the world.”
He then proclaimed that he would “marry her all over again.”
“I still love her,” he said. “It would be a lot easier to walk away if I didn’t.”
