Dr. Pol has been through some rough winters in Michigan

Summer in Dr. Pol’s neck of Michigan feels like a short-lived dream compared to the long winters in the state. In his memoir, Never Turn Your Back on an Angus Cow, the doctor described how his practice was turned upside down when filming began on the Nat Geo Wild reality show. And the moment he knew the camera crew was serious about their jobs.

“The first time I worked with cameraman Mark Myers was a bitterly cold day in winter,” he wrote. “I’m used to that weather and wear the proper clothing. The crew was filming an interview outdoors with a client, the wind was howling, and the temperature was dropping.”

The animal doctor went on to describe how the cameraman suffered a permanent injury that proved his mettle to the vet.

“Mark was holding on to a metal rod at the end of the camera; he was losing feeling in his fingers, but he didn’t say a word until the interview was completed,” Dr. Pol wrote. “Then he went back to the car and put on some hand warmers, but it was a little too late; he never got the feeling back in the end of his pinky. When something like that happened . . . I began to realize they were serious about this show.”

Dr. Pol’s summer playlist

So what are some of the 77-year-old veterinarian’s favorite tunes?

On a recent Instagram post, Dr. Pol lists a few of his favorite songs of the crazy, hazy days of summer, his “Summer of Pol Playlist.”

His post asked, “What songs are on your summer playlist? Here are a few of Doc’s faves!”

The doc’s picks reflect his love for older hits from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, including: “Kokomo” by The Beach Boys; “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by The Four Seasons; “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver; and “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison.
