‘The L Word: Generation Q’: A Season 3 Update
The L Word: Generation Q left viewers with plenty of questions, concerns, and anticipation for its next season. Spun off from 2004’s The L Word, the series follows a group of LGBTQIA friends experiencing love and life in Los Angeles. It launched on Showtime in 2019 and stars Stephanie Allynne, Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey, Jordan Hull, Arienne Mandi, Sepideh Moafi, Katherine Moennig, Leo Sheng, Jacqueline Toboni, and Rosanny Zayas.

The status of ‘The L Word: Generation Q’ Season 3
It was announced in February that Showtime had picked up The L Word: Generation Q for another season. Three months later, it seems the writing team has been assembled and is hard at work on the show’s next episodes. Marja Lewis-Ryan, the showrunner of The L Word: Generation Q, posted such online in April, along with a photo of the writing team. It can be seen here on Instagram.
What to expect next season on the show
The latest season concluded in October 2021, leaving each of the characters at a fork in the road in either their personal or professional lives. A synopsis from a press release from Showtime says the results of those decisions will be explored next season.
“In season two, Bette (Beals) dealt with Tina (guest star Laurel Holloman) and Carrie’s (guest star Rosie O’Donnell) engagement, and daughter Angie’s (Hull) search for her birth father; Shane (Moennig) ramped up her business and her feelings for Tess (Jamie Clayton); and hot new author Alice (Hailey) wrestled with her own complicated feelings for her book editor,” reads the synopsis.
“Meanwhile, a newly single Dani (Mandi) leaned on Gigi (Moafi) during her father’s trial; Finley (Toboni) and Sophie (Zayas) tried hard to make it work despite Finley’s spiraling addiction; and friends Micah (Sheng) and Maribel (Jillian Mercado) fell hard for each other,” the statement continues. “What results of all these complex affairs of life and love will be revealed in season three.”
That suggests the cast of The L Word: Generation Q Season 3 will include the usual actors. (Allynne, Beals, Hailey, Mandi, Moafi, Moennig, Sheng, Toboni, and Zayas.) It’s unclear whether guest stars Rosie O’Donnell, Donald Faison, and Laurel Holloman will be back, but it seems possible based on where the show left their characters.
‘The L Word: Generation Q’ will return this year
So far, the exact release date for The L Word: Generation Q Season 3 has not been shared. However, Showtime has said the series will be back in 2022.
Considering the time it typically takes for a show to go through the stages of production, a late 2022 release date seems likely. But of course, there’s no way to tell for sure. Showbiz Cheat Sheet previously reached out to Showtime for comment but did not hear back.
