‘The Last Duel’: Jodie Comer Opened Up About ‘Delirious’ Kissing Scene
You’ve heard of the Oscars, but have you heard of the Isaacs? The Isaac Awards, in honor of the great Oscar Isaac, are Showbiz Cheat Sheet’s unique spin on the Academy Awards. However, the Isaac Awards are different from the Oscars in that they celebrate the best movies of 2021 that deserve recognition but will not receive that recognition through Oscar nods. The 2022 Isaac Awards feature five categories: Best Performance, Best Scene-Stealer, Best Crowd-Pleasing Moment, Best Action Sequence, and Fan-Favorite Movie. Voting will be open via this form from March 7-20. Winners will be announced on March 24.
Filmmaker Ridley Scott’s movies The Last Duel and House of Gucci drew some of the most criticism out of any other 2021 movie titles. However, they both have loyal fans who embrace their stories and performances. Actor Jodie Comer talked about a kissing scene that left the cast members of The Last Duel “delirious.”
Jodie Comer plays Marguerite de Carrouges in Ridley Scott’s ‘The Last Duel’
The Last Duel tells its story across three chapters. Each of them explores a different perspective of the same story resulting in the rape of Marguerite de Carrouges (Comer). The first is her husband, Sir Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon), who feels that royalty continues to cheat him out of what he is owed. Next, is Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), the assailant. Finally, The Last Duel tells the true perspective of Marguerite.
Audiences might recognize Comer from other big projects, such as Free Guy, Killing Eve, and Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. Her latest film is a rather uncomfortable watch, although critics praised her performance. Comer stars alongside other big actors in The Last Duel but often steals the scene in an impressive portrayal.
Jodie Comer opened up about a ‘delirious’ kissing scene where they got ‘really bad’ giggles
Screen Rant attended a press event including Comer and other stars from The Last Duel. She talked about her experience on the set and what it took to bring Marguerite to life on the silver screen.
“I think the beautiful thing about the script was it was all there on the page,” Comer said. “The intentions were very, very clear as to what was needed in each perspective. What was sometimes jarring was that we shot each version simultaneously, so we were literally jumping from one to the next.”
Comer added: “And then I’m always wanting to make sure that we’ve got Marguerite. I felt really loyal to her and really wanted to make sure that we’d always got that in the bag, and then I felt like I could play around with the other versions.
Comer further explained that she had a lot of freedom to explore Marguerite. However, the kissing scene wasn’t the easiest sequence to get through because they couldn’t stop giggling.
“But I was kind of afforded a lot of freedom in what I wanted to explore,” Comer said. “We kind of played around with the subtlety and how far we wanted to push it. We kind of got a little bit delirious in that [kiss] scene. Do you remember when we were doing that kiss when we did the party? We all got really bad-bad giggles, which wasn’t ideal.”
Comer concluded: “But it was great to then see the final film and see how all those moments play out because it’s so important that when you’re in each perspective, you’re really invested in what that character is telling you.
‘The Last Duel’ is a controversial, polarizing movie
The Last Duel was controversial right out the gate for its difficult subject matter, graphically depicting a rape scene a few times over. This started a debate on social media for how filmmakers should handle such a delicate subject. However, others fully embraced the film’s uncompromising execution of a difficult topic.
However, fans of The Last Duel praised performances from Comer, Damon, Driver, and Ben Affleck. They were shocked to discover that the Razzies nominated Affleck for Worst Supporting Actor. In response, many folks stated that the film was snubbed out of the Oscars 2022 race only to earn a Razzie nomination.
