‘The Last Kingdom’: Alexander Dreymon Discusses Uhtred’s Relationship With Aethelflaed
In the history of The Last Kingdom, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) has had an ever-changing relationship with Aethelflaed (Millie Brady). In season 4, things change drastically and fans have a lot of feelings about the whole thing. Read on to learn what Dreymon himself has to say about their relationship in the new season.
Uhtred and Aethelflaed have been good friends for years
During the time they’ve known each other, they have become good friends. Uhtred made an oath to her father, King Alfred (David Dawson) and therefore they encounter each other many times over the years. However, Uhtred forms an attachment to Aethelflaed and her to him, though it seems like just a familial bond at first.
Uhtred protects Aethelflaed above all else and he’s always willing to come when she calls him. Aethelflaed grows to love Uhtred and she kisses him on one occasion. In another moment with Uhtred, she makes it clear that she wants him to kiss her. He says he’ll enjoy it, but later grow to regret it.
Things have changed in season 4
In episode 1 of season 4, it’s clear to fans that the two are now lovers. Unfortunately, viewers were unable to witness the love grow between them. They share an intimate encounter and fans had a lot of feelings about the whole thing. Many were hoping to see the relationship blossom instead of happening off-screen.
Alexander Dreymon discusses Uhtred’s relationship with Aethelflaed
Dreymon spoke with Variety before the new season premiered and he detailed Uhtred’s new relationship with Aethelflaed. He said it was a “long time coming,” and fans can certainly agree with that statement.
“Well, I think that’s been a long time coming, and I’m really glad we start off the season the way we do,” Dreymon said. “But then Uhtred just can’t seem to stay in a situation where he’s settled down and when nothing’s going to happen. So it was kind of bound to go the way it does.”
In the new season, their romance fizzles out quickly when a new leader of Mercia is needed. King Edward (Timothy Innes) wants Uhtred to lead, but he chooses to step down in favor of Aethelflaed. However, she makes an oath that she will “remain chaste” while ruling Mercia, so they can no longer be together it seems.
“I think Millie [Brady] stepped up her game this season because she has so much responsibility all of a sudden,” Dreymon continued. “I think that was really good development of her character, especially when you see the way Brida develops in the story. You suddenly have these two hugely powerful female characters who were set up against each other and Uhtred’s between them trying to figure it out.”
Although the romance was short-lived, there will always be something between Uhtred and Aethelflaed. Will he always come to her aid when called? That’s most likely the case, but we’ll have to wait and see if the show is renewed to know for sure.
