‘The Last Kingdom’s’ season 5

The story of Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), son of Lord Uhtred is going to be cut short, but there’s still one more season to come. The Saxon brought up as a Dane still has a lot more story to get through, as the series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s beloved novel series The Saxon Stories. The final season will follow the next novels to come in the series, nine and 10, titled, “Warriors of the Storm” and “The Flame Bearer,” according to Radio Times. It will be 10 episodes in total, and fans could see it later this year or in the beginning of 2022.

A video announcement was released on the official social media channels on April 30, 2021, that the series is back in production. However, that same day, fans learned season 5 is the last season.

Ahead of the video announcement came the news of the series’ end. Deadline announced the news of the conclusion of the series with season 5, verifying with Netflix and Carnival Films.

Nigel Marchant, the executive producer of the series, said [via Variety], “We are really proud of The Last Kingdom, which continues to entertain audiences all over the world. We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for a fifth and final season on Netflix. With such a loyal fanbase, we’re excited to give viewers a chance to follow Uhtred on the next stage of his epic quest, where not everyone survives.”

Dreymon will direct an episode in season 5, and he said, “I love this job. Playing Uhtred for 5 seasons has been a wonderful journey. And I’m truly grateful to have been given the opportunity to direct. In doing so, I came to fully appreciate the spectacular talent and skill of our cast and crew even more. I can’t wait to share it with our fans, without whom none of this would be possible.”

Fans have created a petition for season 6

But fans aren’t just lying down; one of them started a petition to Netflix and Carnival Films for a sixth season. The petition is titled, “THE LAST KINGDOM Fans want a 6th Season! To Carnival Films and Netflix,” and it can be found on change.org.

The petition says, “There are enough books to cover at least 6 seasons so it is unacceptable to all the fans of the show that season 5 would be the last one. Uhtred’s story deserves a proper ending. This is the best show on Netflix right now and has a dedicated and growing fandom who will always be here to support and promote it worldwide!” Those who started the petition call fans “loyal arselings,” saying they’d “like to petition to Netflix and Carnival Films to consider a 6th season.” They add, “please, it cannot end this way.”

The goal is for 10,000 signatures, and at the time of this article’s posting, 8,116 people had signed the petition, so it could very well get 10,000 signatures or more.

Will the petition make a difference? It’s unclear, but it gives some fans hope for a sixth season.
