‘The Last Kingdom’: Get a First Look at Aethelstan in Season 5
The hit series The Last Kingdom will return with a new season, but it will also be the last one fans will get. However, there is still one season to go, which is still exciting for eager fans. Luckily, actors and others who work on the show have been sharing content keeping fans occupied. Even the official social media accounts for the series have been sharing looks at some of the characters ahead of season 5. New characters are getting their time in the spotlight as well, and that includes Aethelstan (Harry Gilby).

When we last saw Aethelstan, he was with Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) and just a young boy at the time. He is the first son of King Edward (Timothy Innes) from his first marriage. He’s given over to Uhtred when he is a child at the end of season 4. It will be interesting to see him after being with Uhtred, who is supposed to make Aethelstan a warrior. He will eventually be the first king of England.
Time has passed, and Aethelstan is much older now. In a first look thanks to the official social media channels, fans can see Aethelstan as he will appear in season 5. He’s older, with longer hair while wearing dark-colored clothing. He’s looking off while seeming rather serious, and not much else can be seen from the image. The name of the series is in the upper left corner. There is also a quote from Aethelstan, proving he’s quite wise already. “’It’s not my reputation men wish to test.’ – Aethelstan.”
The post, which was shared on August 23, 2021, is captioned on Instagram: “Reputation is everything… #thelastkingdom #tlk5.”

Fans have also been treated to an official look at Aethelstan’s father, King Edward of Wessex. He’s the son of the late King Alfred (David Dawson) and Lady Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth). Edward is trying to find his place as King after his father. However, it is far from smooth sailing. He convinces Uhtred to take his son at the end of season 4. We’ll have to see what season 5 holds for this king who’s had to make deals with the Danes to promote peace.
On July 8, an image of Edward was shared from the upcoming season. In the photo, the name of the series is written in the left corner. Edward can be seen looking off as he wears his crown with a full beard and long hair. He wears regal robes with a clasp in the middle of his neck.
Below him is a quote from Edward. “’Towns can be rebuilt. Reputations? It is not so easy…’ – King Edward.”
The post is captioned on Instagram: “Whose reputation will survive and whose will be destroyed forever? #thelastkingdom #tlk5.”
It’s always great to see the official looks at characters, especially new characters, ahead of an upcoming season. We’ll have to see what else is shared before the final season of The Last Kingdom premieres.
