Lady Aelswith

Lady Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) is King Alfred’s (David Dawson) widow. She’s a pious woman who starts to realize in season 4 that she can catch more flies with honey. Her son is now the King of Wessex and isn’t looking to her for guidance, so she takes it upon herself to do what she feels is right for the good of Wessex and Mercia. She even finds a way to get the Welsh to fight on the side of the Mercians so they can defeat the Danes in battle.

Fans have grown to like Aelswith much more in this new season. Watching her change and become a more likable person has been very enjoyable. A fan on Reddit can’t even “believe” how they feel about Aeslwith in season 4. “I can’t believe how much I like Aelswith this season,” a fan of the series wrote.

Another fan agrees that Aelswith’s arc this season has been “one of the best.” “It’s genuinely one of the best redemption arcs I’ve seen. To go from arguably the most hated character to now this,” a fan said.

Haesten

Haesten (Jeppe Beck Laursen) is a Dane who likes to play both sides of the coin. He can be malicious when he wants to be and he’s known to start some drama, but that’s why fans love him so much. He tells the Saxons one thing and the Danes another, and he always seems to be far away from the battle. He’s a source of immense humor on the show, especially this season.

“I know Haesten has a lot of bad qualities and that most people probably don’t like him. But he’s become one my favorite characters in the show,” a Reddit user said. “The way he’s in the higher circles, but kinda just roams around with nothing to his name. Sitting around, eating, spying… he even tells his allies ‘aight imma head out’ when battles approach.”

Father Pyrlig

Father Pyrlig (Cavan Clerkin) serves Wessex and always seems to bring a smile to people’s faces. He’s also a friend to Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon). In season 4, he ends up being manipulated, especially by Lady Aelswith to achieve her own desires without the consent of King Edward (Timothy Innes). He is tasked with getting the Welsh to join forces with the Mercians, which he accomplishes. Although he always does his part, he doesn’t get a lot of credit for his loyalty, especially in the new season when people owe him a lot.

Eadith

Eadith (Stefanie Martini) is the sister of Eardwulf (Jamie Blackley), who ends up manipulated by men until she has enough. She forges her own path when she helps Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) escape from Mercia. She finds herself allied with Uhtred and his gang of loyal followers, and she helps protect the children they travel with at all costs.

Fans really seem to have taken a liking to her. She’s far from corrupt and she goes out of her way to prove herself. “Can we talk about how great Eadith is?” a Reddit user admitted. “I love this woman.”

Sigtryggr

Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurdarson) is a Dane who saves Brida (Emily Cox) from the Welsh. He quickly makes a name for himself and finds a way to get what he wants from King Edward. He also walks away with Uhtred’s daughter by his side, something some fans didn’t see coming.

Sigtryggr has no problem bad-mouthing the Danes who came before him like it’s nothing or forging a compromise when it fits the situation. Fans have really grown to like him in season 4. “Sigtryggr is a breath of fresh air. A strategist and not someone rash who will fall right into a trap. I love how he dealt with Brida, Stiorra, and Eardwulf in this episode,” a Reddit user said in regards to episode 9.

Season 4 of The Last Kingdom was memorable because of these MVPs who stepped up to the plate.
