Brida holds a grudge against Uhtred in ‘The Last Kingdom’

Uhtred and Brida actually grew up together after being adopted by the Danes. They are both Saxon, but they become Vikings in their own right. They are lovers in season 1, but it doesn’t last between them. Their relationship is more than complicated, and it worsens as time goes on.

In season 4, Brida holds a grudge against Uhtred for not killing her when she is found by the Welsh in battle, as she thought she would go to Valhalla. She’s taken as a slave, and it’s an extremely hard time for her. It’s something she blames Uhtred for.

She is eventually freed by Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson), and she finds herself allied with him when and they invade Wessex, taking Winchester. But Sigtryggr eventually comes to an agreement with the Saxons to leave Winchester.

While negotiations are being made in Winchester, Brida attacks Uhtred in the final episode of season 4, stabbing him after he checks on a guard who has been attacked.

“Did you think I would forget you?” she asks with a weapon in each of her hands.

“Stop this. It is over,” Uhtred insists.

But she tells him it’s “never over,” and she continues trying to kill him. Uhtred dodges her attacks, pushing her away. He says he “spared” her life, but she insists that he “destroyed” it.

“You know nothing of how I suffered,” she declares.

Brida, who is heavily pregnant with Cnut’s (Magnus Bruun) child, isn’t letting that stop her. “I will not kill you, nor Cnut’s child,” Uhtred tells her.

She replies that the child isn’t Cnut’s but hers. “And he will be loyal to me as no man every has,” Brida adds. “I will breed in him a hatred of all Saxons.”

“Then you condemn your child to a bloody death and that will undo you,” Uhtred tells his former friend.

Brida continues to try and strike Uhtred, and he dodges the attacks, picking up a sword, meeting her weapon in the air and fighting her. But he subdues her by grabbing her arm, cornering her up against a wall.

“Fight on and they will kill you,” Uhtred tells her. “If not the Saxon kings then Sigtryggr himself.” He tells her this while pointing the sword at her throat.

‘I will take revenge on all of these who have betrayed me’

“But I am not afraid of that,” she tells him. “I have not lost faith in what comes after.” She tells him to “do it,” as he has his sword aimed at her. She continues, telling him to kill her.

“If you do not I will become stronger,” she insists. “Blood has been shed. More will flow. I will take revenge on all of these who have betrayed me, and I will not rest until they suffer at my hand.”

She grabs the sword, telling him again to “do it,” but Uhtred can’t. “Or I will be your undoing,” she insists. Uhtred steps away and tells her to “just leave,” and adds for her to have her child. She does leave, and goes on to go into labor before the episode concludes.

We’ll have to see if Uhtred and Brida will meet again in season 5 of The Last Kingdom and how it will go.
