‘The Last Kingdom’: Why Fans Wanted to See More of Uhtred and Aethelflaed in Season 4
Season 4 of The Last Kingdom was full of twists and turns that fans are still trying to come to terms with. One thing numerous fans agree on is that they wanted to see more of Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) and Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) together in the new season. Uhtred and Aethelflaed are together in season 4
In season 4, fans get to see Uhtred and Aethelflaed together, but not for long before circumstances drive them apart. When Aethelflaed’s husband dies, there’s a rush to secure power in Mercia. Even her brother King Edward of Wessex (Timothy Innes) gets in on the action. When Uhtred is chosen to be the leader in Mercia, Aethelflaed is against it and he abdicates immediately in favor of her.
“Am I the only one who wanted to see more of Uhtred’s and Aethelflaed’s chemistry?” a fan asked on Reddit. “I thought they had a great romance going on and I was disappointed that the writer never let them go full-on. They couldn’t do anything in public. And after, Aethelflaed becomes Lady of Mercia and now they can’t do anything about it.”
Why fans wanted to see more of them together
When Aethelflaed is chosen as the Lady of Mercia, she decides to take a vow of chastity so no man can rule through her while she is in charge. This means no more Uhtred and Aethelflaed, and fans aren’t very happy about it. There were only a couple of scenes of them expressing their love and it wasn’t enough for hungry fans who weren’t expecting it to be such a quick romance. Their chemistry is undeniable to some fans who were craving more.
“They spent almost the entire third season setting them up, finally they get together – only it’s already been almost a decade later, but they are still in the honeymoon phase so that’s nice (after all that time), and then….after robbing us of their fling for that much time, we get a couple of scenes where they show affection and it’s gone. Because Aethelflaed made that ridiculous vow,” a Reddit user passionately expressed.
Some fans think Uhtred and Aethelflaed could have gotten married and ruled Mercia together
Fans describe being “let down” when Aethelflaed made her vow to the Mercian nobility. She could have just married Uhtred instead, securing her future with him and the safety of her daughter as well. He was willing to do anything for her and she just gives all of that up. Fans wanted to see more of the two together, but they were sadly mistaken.
“I felt so let down the moment she swore she would remain chaste for Mercia,” another fan explained. “Uhtred just relinquished the throne to her and she goes and has to come up with that idea of remaining chaste. I can respect it but just…****. The look on his face….ugh I felt that.”
One fan thought Aethelflaed might propose marriage with Uhtred, until she made her vow that is. It definitely would have made many fans happy to see a marriage between them after so many years of them not being together.
“Just before this happened, I thought she was going to propose a marriage between Uhtred and herself,” a fan wrote. “No other lords would be able to swoop in and marry her, the lords already supported following Uhtred, and the two of them would (secretly) get what they wanted.”
Fans wanted to see more of Uhtred and Aethelflaed together in season 4 of The Last Kingdom. Sadly, they can no longer be together which is sad for many fans.
