Uhtred learns that it’s the perfect time to try and take back his home of Bebbanburg from his uncle. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned and he loses Father Beocca (Ian Hart) in the battle. Uhtred is more than devastated and he’s having a hard time dealing with the situation.

When they finally manage to get away from Bebbanburg, Young Uhtred struggles to realize why he’s there with his father. He doesn’t feel wanted or even needed by a father he barely knows. Uhtred gets angry when his son tells him he’s praying for Beocca. Young Uhtred thinks his father blames him for Beocca’s death.

Finan gets real with Young Uhtred

Finan comes over to console Uhtred’s son, who says he will return to the church if his father doesn’t want him. Young Uhtred thinks he reminds his father of his defeat and the loss of Beocca in the process, but Finan knows better and he tries to explain it to him.

“Uhtred is a warrior and a father. It’s his job to save you and he could not, that’s what eats at him,” Finan explains. Young Uhtred says Uhtred has never been a father to him in truth. “Because of his absence?” Finan inquires. “Do you know how many battles he’s fought? How many times he’s sworn oaths and risked his life for your Christian king at the cost of his own hopes and comfort? I met your father as a slave and we had nothing. Now you look at what he lacks. Not what he has given to others.”

Finan tries to explain that Uhtred fights for his children and to give them what he never had. “I swear, he is a great man and his blood runs in your veins. You should be proud to follow him,” Finan tells him.

Why Finan had to step in

Finan had to try to remedy the situation because he sees the potential in Young Uhtred. He also knows how great his father is and he’s trying to fix a hard situation for everyone involved. Finan knows Uhtred’s mind, something his son hasn’t come to figure out just yet. He’s trying to get him to understand his father’s actions a little more clearly so he can better understand him.

Finan is a great friend to Uhtred and he’ll do whatever he has to for him, including talking to his son. Eventually, Young Uhtred and his father find common ground and they form a connection as the season progresses. This could all lead back to Finan’s conversation with Young Uhtred about his father.

Fans of The Last Kingdom get to see a different side to their favorite characters in season 4. It was nice to see Uhtred with his older children, especially his son Young Uhtred.
