On February 21, 1986, The Legend of Zelda released on NES, making 2022 The Legend of Zelda 36th anniversary. While Nintendo fans hoped for more celebration in 2021 for The Legend of Zelda 35th anniversary, they only saw a few special releases like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and the Zelda: Game & Watch. For Link and Princess Zelda’s 36th year since the Nintendo series started, fans took things into their own hands, celebrating their favorite series in their own ways.

Nintendo fans posted pictures of their ‘Zelda’ themed wear for ‘The Legend of Zelda’ 36th Anniversary

On Twitter, #Zelda36th trended on February 21, 2022. Clicking it brought users to a fan-made celebration of the series. Fans posted artwork and cosplays showing the evolution of Link and Princess Zelda from the original NES release to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

YouTuber and Twitch streamer Trisha Hershberger celebrated with a blue dress adorned with various Zelda icons. Designs from Link’s shirt in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, along with silhouettes of the pirate Tetra, aka Princess Zelda appeared on it.

Then other fans posted pictures in clothes inspired by Urbosa and the Gerudo Tribe from Breath of the Wild. CurlyCosplay posed with the Master Sword, the Hylian Shield, and also the Shiekah Slate.

Sweetnayru went even more elaborate. She posted a picture decked out in full Midna makeup and attire from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Artistic fans also wanted to show off their love for the series, too. Nintendo fans posted artwork of Link from the 1986 NES game and pieces from their favorite games in the series.

Over on Reddit, one fan posted adorable art of Princess Zelda and links to a timelapse video. 

Huttaburger on Twitter went old school, recreating the climactic original Legend of Zelda boss fight between Link and Ganon in beautiful pixel art.

More fans celebrated The Legend of Zelda 36th Anniversary by sharing their favorite series memories.

Zelda Universe noted The Legend of Zelda 36th Anniversary trending on Twitter. They then asked the fandom about their favorite memories from the series. And fans responded with plenty of emotions.

Several fans reminisced about playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask on Nintendo 64 growing up.

Other Twitter users cited emotional moments in the Nintendo series, like when Ravio revealed his identity in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds or the romance between Link and Zelda in Skyward Sword.

While Nintendo did not provide much celebration, the fans showed that they more than have the means to praise the series that gave them so much. And when Breath of the Wild 2 finally releases, they’ll have one more game to celebrate.
