Radcliffe compares ‘The Lost City’ to ‘The Mummy’

One film that many are comparing The Lost City to is Robert Zemeckis’ Romancing the Stone, which has a similar plot and tone. In an interview with The New York Times, Radcliffe does say there are elements of Romancing the Stone within this movie, but he also brings up another popular adventure movie.

Romancing the Stone is obviously a big point of comparison, and also the first Mummy movie with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz,” Radcliffe said. “That’s one of my favorite films, and this does feel like a classic adventure film where you’re rooting for the characters and rooting for the relationship, but also it’s that slightly heightened world where even in deadly, perilous moments, people are still being quippy and funny with each other and it’s a delight.”

The Mummy (1999) stars Fraser and Weisz as explorers who reincarnate an ancient mummy spirit that threatens to take over the world. The film spawned two sequels, The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Radcliffe is correct in his comparison because The Mummy gained many fans due to its cheesy humor, entertaining action, and overwhelming sense of adventure.

Radcliffe’s comment comes at a time when Fraser is having a comeback in his career. Fraser starred in movies such as The Mummy trilogy, George of the Jungle, and Journey to the Center of the Earth. Unfortunately, in the 2010s, Fraser experienced a gap in his career, where many fans wondered what happened to the actor.

However, the actor is now experiencing a resurgence with appearances in projects such as Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move and Doom Patrol on HBO Max. He is also playing the villain in the upcoming Batgirl movie and has a role in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. The Mummy is one of Fraser’s most beloved films, and it’s cool to see that Radcliffe shares an appreciation for it.

The Lost City premieres in theaters on March 25.
