‘The Office’ Has So Many Connections to ‘The Devil Wears Prada’
During season 4 of The Office, one episode’s cold open involved Michael Scott recreating scenes from The Devil Wears Prada. John Krasinski is married to one of the film’s stars, Emily Blunt, but the reference was a coincidence at the time because they weren’t together yet. Find out the other ways The Office and The Devil Wears Prada are connected.
Michael Scott channels Meryl Streep in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’
The Office Season 4 Episode 7/8, titled “Money,” begins with a cold open that involves boss Michael playing out some of Meryl Streep’s moments from The Devil Wears Prada.
Pam explains that Michael has been watching the movie when there’s downtime at work, so he hadn’t seen the whole thing yet. “He’s a big Meryl Streep fan, so I shouldn’t be surprised that he’s identified with her character,” she says.
Once he’s seen the rest of the movie, he apologizes to Pam, telling her there was a “big surprise ending … Meryl Streep is the bad guy. Never see it coming. Anyways, if I was mean in any way to you, I am sorry. I just want what’s best for you, Mo Chuisle.”
In a talking head interview, Pam identifies that Michael referenced the movie Million Dollar Baby, nervously adding, “He’s gonna try to kill me.”
There are numerous ‘Office’ and ‘Devil Wears Prada’ connections
During the Jan. 27 episode of the Office Ladies podcast, hosts Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey discussed the episode and said they received many fan questions wondering if Krasinski and Blunt were together when The Devil Wears Prada references were made on the show.
“It was a coincidence, you guys,” Fischer confirmed.
That prompted Fischer to dig in and see if there were other coincidences. “And it brings up a very interesting set of trivia that I have called ‘Six Degrees of Devil Wears Prada,’” she said.
“The Office cast has a lot of connections to the cast of The Devil Wears Prada. Do you want to hear them?,” she asked Kinsey.
“All right. Well, we know that John Krasinski will marry Emily Blunt,” she notes, adding, “Steve Carell will go on after this episode to star in Get Smart with Anne Hathaway.”
Another star of The Office also had a professional connection, as Fischer explained, “Rainn Wilson was in Entourage with Adrian Grenier.”
“Rich Sommer, who was also in Devil Wears Prada, will later appear on The Office as Pam’s art school friend,” she continued. “And listen to this one. The movie The Devil Wears Prada was based on a book written by Lauren Weisberger, and she’s from Scranton.”
The funniest connection, however, involves Fischer and Kinsey, as Fischer explained, “Angela, you and I will eventually fake laugh at an awards show with Meryl Streep … I feel like that counts.”
Kinsey interjected, “She will have no idea, does not remember that moment. But we did walk up to her fake laughing.”
Fischer admitted her final connection was “a little bit of a stretch,” sharing that “Stanley Tucci will marry Emily Blunt’s sister in real life.”
