‘The Office’: Jenna Fischer & Angela Kinsey Recall the Time ‘The Cast Was Turning on Us!’
It’s no secret that the cast of The Office was extremely close-knit. Many alums of the show have spoken out about the fact that set of the hit show was a warm and welcoming place where everyone got along famously. The actors were able to form strong friendships that persist today. Fans may recall that writers and fellow castmates Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak are close friends and Novak is even the godfather of Kaling’s children.
Of course, Novak and Kaling weren’t the only cast members to develop a deep and long-lasting friendship on The Office. Angela Kinsey, who played accountant, Angela Martin, and Jenna Fischer, who played receptionist, Pam Beesly, are best friends in real life also and have been since their early days working on The Office.
‘The Office’ stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey are best friends in real life
Thanks to their podcast, Office Ladies, it’s now common knowledge that Fischer and Kinsey are best friends. But because their characters didn’t get along in The Office, many fans weren’t privy to their personal relationship for years. However, the cast and crew were aware of how close the two actors were. In fact, in a 2019 interview with Vulture, Fischer revealed that the writers intentionally wrote scenes for her and Kinsey that were in direct contrast with their real-life relationship.
“The writers knew we were best friends in real life, and they had fun with the fact that our characters didn’t get along,” Fischer revealed. The Office writers may have fun writing scenes for Kinsey and Fischer, but the besties had even more fun filming said scenes. In fact, it could be argued that they often had too much fun together. No matter what the context or tone of the scene was, the pair (much like John Krasinski) were constantly driven to hysterics whenever they filmed together.
The castmates couldn’t stop laughing whenever they filmed scenes together
“Angela and I had a problem,” Fischer declared. “Every time we had a scene together, we wouldn’t be able to stop laughing.” Kinsey clearly echoed her bestie’s sentiments. “Even at the most basic sentences, we would crack up,” Kinsey added. The pair were so overcome with giggles that they would even cause delays on set of The Office because the scenes had to be filmed over and over again to get one take where they weren’t laughing. “It was bad,” Fischer confessed. “We would waste so much time laughing!”
Kinsey even recalled that one time a director had to call for a break because she and Fischer simply could not get control of themselves. “There was one scene where I come over the partition and I ask Pam, ‘I need relationship advice, and since you’re always having relationship problems, give me some advice …’ after the incident with Sprinkles the cat in the freezer,” The Office alum recalled. “We couldn’t get through that scene. We were laughing so hard that the director was like, ‘Uh, you know what, I’m gonna give you guys a minute, let’s stop for a break.’ The cast was turning on us!”
It seems that Kinsey and Fischer truly managed to have fun while they were filming The Office together. While they may have caused a few delays with their giggle fests, the memories they made seem to be well worth it.
