John Krasinski really got elbowed in this ‘The Office’ scene

During a 2019 episode of the Office Ladies podcast, hosts Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey discussed the season1 episode of The Office called “Basketball” that left Krasinski with a real injury.

“You have to tell about when John actually got hurt,” Kinsey said. “We actually had a real injury and they just kept the camera rolling.”

Fischer added, “They did. This was not scripted. The part where Roy knocks Jim in the nose and his nose is bleeding.”

Kinsey explained how the accidental injury happened. “That was just David Denman blocking, like getting a ball and blocking out,” she noted. “He threw his elbow back, not knowing that John was there, and clocked John.”

Fischer added, “And his nose started gushing blood.”

John Krasinski’s co-stars were worried his nose was broken

The co-hosts went on to discuss how they could actually hear a sound when Denman’s elbow made contact with Krasinski’s face.

Fischer explained that they were worried about Krasinski but the cameras kept going. “We’re like, is his nose broken? And we had to pause and like, ice pack him,” she said.

Kinsey clarified, “First of all, they didn’t stop rolling. They kept documenting it. And so we see that John ran off because he was in pain and his nose starts bleeding.”

Fischer shared that they paused filming because there was a lot of blood. “They also told me at a certain point they had to stop it where they stopped it because blood was dripping on the floor,” she explained. “It looked a little gruesome.”

‘The Office’ star was convinced Krasinski didn’t like him after the injury

Denman explained how the scene played out from his perspective, saying he worried that he had really hurt Krasinski at the time.

During a 2019 interview with WBUR, Denman explained how the moment was supposed to look like he hit Krasinski but the actor really bumped his co-star and Krasinski’s lip started bleeding.

“The sad part about it is, in reality, he really did get hit in the face,” Denman said. “I elbowed him. We worked on the beat of me, you know, faking and turning. But he got a little close, and my elbow went up a little higher. And the adrenaline of the situation, you know, everything ends up oftentimes not working out exactly how you plan it.”

“And it was just way too close. And I caught him on the lip, busted his lip up. He’s bleeding,” he continued. That’s all real blood.”

“And they continue filming. And at a certain point, John’s like, ‘Guys, I’m bleeding. Like, really, can we stop filming and stop this?’” Denman recalled.

“And they were supposed to shoot their first poster of what the show is going to be that next Saturday. And he got his lip busted in half thanks to me,” he added. “So I don’t think John liked me too much the first couple of years.”
