In a vintage episode of The Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond spoke about the days she and daughters Alex and Paige would enjoy Chinese take-out on days they drove into town from their ranch for homeschooling classes. Paige would always get Beef with Broccoli, Alex enjoyed Orange Chicken, and the women shared stir-fried Chow Mein as a group. However, there was always one super easy appetizer that made the list, Cream Cheese Wontons. Drummond recreated the recipe at home to enjoy with her family whenever the mood arose; no drive-thru required.

What are Cream Cheese Wontons?

Cream Cheese Wontons are savory bites made from wonton wrappers, cream cheese, and seasonings.

Subsequently, they are wrapped up and fried in very hot oil. The wontons are served with a dipping sauce.

Versatile Cream Cheese Wontons can be the main dish, a tasty appetizer, or an unexpected side.

‘The Pioneer Woman’ star spoke of her love for Cream Cheese Wontons

In the video above, Drummond claimed she would try and recreate some of her and her girls’ favorite Chinese takeout dishes at home.

“The girls and I got into this habit of going to the Chinese takeout place for lunch, and not its an automatic response,” Drummond explained.

“Whenever we go to the homeschool co-op, we have to have Chinese takeout.

However, the Food Network star concluded, “This is a great appetizer if you’re having people over for dinner or watching a football game on tv. They’re so good.”

For her version of this savory dish, Drummond uses a block of softened cream cheese, scallions, and hot sauce to fill the wontons. This creamy mixture is spooned into wonton wrappers, generally available in local supermarkets.

Drummond also made a dipping sauce to go with these tasty honey, soy sauce, Siracha, vinegar, and sesame oil.

Cream cheese Wontons are easy to assemble.

For the dipping sauce: Mix the honey, soy sauce, Sriracha, vinegar, and sesame oil in a small bowl and set aside.

Keep wonton wrappers under a damp towel. Take out one wrapper at a time and add a little bit of the cream cheese mixture to the center, about half a teaspoon.

Take a beaten egg and dip your finger in it. Run it along the entire edge of the wrapper. Close as directed in the video.

Fried one at a time until crispy. Drain on paper towels.
