‘The Pioneer Woman’: Ree Drummond Gives Grilled Cheese a Pizza Twist
Ree Drummond gives a classic grilled cheese sandwich a fun pizza spin, updating the comfort food with family-friendly flavors. The Pioneer Woman star called her easy recipe a “masterpiece.”
Ree Drumond makes teenager friendly recipes
Drummond made her pizza grilled cheese sandwich during an episode of The Pioneer Woman dedicated to food that teenagers love, though really, any age would love the easy meal.
“Teenager food, it’s what we do,” she said. Have you ever had a pizza grilled cheese?”
Drummond continued, “This is a teenager masterpiece. It has teenager written all over it. I’m kind of projecting and you could actually insert the word ‘Ree’ for ‘teenager’ in all of these recipes. They’re all delicious.”
She made a “super delicious Italian butter” first by stirring together melted butter, crushed red pepper flakes, parmesan cheese, and Italian seasoning. Drummond brushed the butter mixture on slices of bread.
“Anyone who kind of who fancies themselves a grilled cheese-making expert — I’m one of those — knows that you have to be extremely generous with the butter on the bread itself,” the Food Network host noted.
Ree Drummond’s pizza grilled cheese sandwich is loaded with delicious flavors
Drummond heated a nonstick skillet over low heat and placed one piece of bread, butter-side down, in the skillet. She spread marinara sauce on the bread, then added other pizza ingredients — provolone cheese, pepperoni, and mozzarella cheese. “I’m putting in on top of the pepperoni and that way it sort of encloses the pepperoni inside the cheese when it melts,” she pointed out.
The Pioneer Woman host added sliced mini sweet peppers, sliced olives, and basil next. She spread more marinara on the inside of the top piece of bread and placed it, sauce side down, on top. “And now it’s just about being patient, which, when it comes to grilled cheese sandwiches, is not my strong suit,” she said. “But I’m gonna try.”
Drummond flipped the sandwich when the first side was golden, then cooked the other side. “If I’m being totally honest, I had a bit of a catastrophe,” she admitted. “But I fixed it. I tried to flip it again and all the fillings came out. So I had a little construction work.”
She cut the sandwich in half and served it with a bowl of marinara on the side for dipping. “And that is what teenage food is all about,” she said. “I forgot to say, one quality of teenage food is definitely that you have things to dip the food in. Whether it’s ranch, honey mustard, ketchup, or marinara.”
