The Pioneer Woman star Ree Drummond knows several things for sure. Cattle need to be fed on the ranch she shares with her husband Ladd and their five children, Alex, Paige, Bryce, Todd, and Jamar. Work goes on no matter the weather. And, most of all, Hamburger Soup is great for when it’s “ding dang cold outside.” Her beloved family recipe also has another distinction. It reminds Drummond of her beloved grandmother Ga-Ga.

Ree Drummond shares the story behind her beloved recipe for Hamburger Soup

The Food Network star wrote in her book The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Dinnertime that she has always loved Hamburger Soup.

“I made this glorious hamburger soup one Sunday in winter for three very important reasons. One, it was ding, dang cold outside, and all I could think about was soup. Two, church was canceled, and I didn’t have anything else to do. Three I was hungry, man,” she wrote.

“I love hamburger soup so much because it’s meaty and hearty and flavorful and satisfying. It just feels good to eat it, and as a bonus, it always reminds me of my grandmother Ga-Ga,” Drummond penned. “You can add whatever veggies you want: zucchini, green beans, corn, even mushrooms. It’s meaty and hearty and flavorful and satisfying. Best of all, it can be made in one hour.”

What are the ingredients in Ree Drummond’s hamburger soup?

Hamburger Soup is an actual clean-out-the refrigerator type of soup. You can make it with base ingredients of ground chuck, onion, celery, garlic, tomatoes, carrots, tomato paste, and beef broth.

Then, one can personalize it with whatever other ingredients in your refrigerator.

The Pioneer Woman star used the following vegetables for her original recipe: yellow, green, and red bell pepper and potatoes.

As for spices, Drummond used salt, pepper, parsley, oregano, and cayenne pepper.

In her book, The Pioneer Woman Cooks: Dinnertime, Drummond added several tips to making this warming, comforting, and delicious soup.

These include making the soup ahead of the day you intend to eat it because, according to Drummond, it tastes better the next day. A tip for reheating this hearty and comforting bowl of soup is to add a little beef broth or water to thin it out to your liking.

Also, one can use ground turkey instead of ground beef for the base.

This soup can include many other vegetables, such as Drummond’s parsnips and butternut squash suggestions.

All this meal needs is a side of bread, and Hamburger Soup can ward off any chill.

The Pioneer Woman star suggests her recipes for The Bread, Refrigerator Rolls, or Cheese Biscuits in her cookbook.
