‘The Pioneer Woman’ Ree Drummond’s Sticky Crispy Orange Shrimp Is ‘Her Favorite Thing on Earth’
The Pioneer Woman showed home cooks how to make a citrus-based shrimp dish. Here’s how to make Ree Drummond’s sticky crispy orange shrimp.
Ree Drummond’s sticky crispy orange shrimp
Drummond says sticky orange shrimp is one of her “favorite things on earth.” Drummond starts by making a sauce to coat the shrimp. She mixes, orange juice, honey, soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, crushed red pepper flakes, fresh ginger, and fresh garlic. Drummond says ginger and garlic are “essentials” with a dish like orange shrimp. She advises home cooks to whisk the mixture with a fork so that the honey gets mixed in properly.
Next, Drummond adds a spoonful of cornstarch to help thicken the mixture. She emphasizes stirring the mixture well so that the cornstarch dissolves completely. She says it’s OK if have “a clump or two” of cornstarch. Drummond says the cornstarch helps the orange shrimp sauce have a “glossy” and thick consistency. She lets the mixture heat and bubble.
Breading the shrimp
For the next step, Drummond breads the shrimp. She deveins colossal shrimp and cuts them down the back, spreading them apart like a butterfly so that they will fry well. For the breading, Drummond dumps the shrimp in flour, a bowl of eggs, and panko breadcrumbs. The Accidental Country Girl reminds home cooks to turn the shrimp over and make sure there’s no part of it that isn’t covered in breadcrumbs. Drummond fries the shrimp in a skillet of vegetable for two minutes on each side.
Putting the finishing touches on the shrimp
Drummond dries off the excess oil by putting the shrimp in a plate lined with paper towel. Once the shrimp is fried, she places them in a bowl and pours the orange sauce on top. She then takes a serving spoon and tosses the shrimp in the bowl so that the sauce covers them.
Next, Drummond places rice on a plate to go with the shrimp. She says you can also add stir fried vegetables to the rice. Drummond sprinkles green onions on top of the shrimp in addition to soy sauce. You can find the complete ingredients list and directions here.
Ree Drummond’s shrimp sheet pan pita
Another delicious recipe you might want to try is Drummond’s shrimp sheet pan pita. For this recipe, she uses mushroom, yellow squash, red onion, and asparagus. She places the ingredients in a sheet pan and drizzles them with olive oil, salt and pepper, and Italian seasoning. Next, Drummond uses tongs to stir everything together. She then places colossal shrimp next to the vegetables and sprinkles them with salt and pepper and Italian seasoning.
Drummond places the vegetables and shrimp in the oven. She bakes the meal at 425 degrees for about 15 minutes. She also adds pita wrapped in foil. While the vegetables and shrimp cook, Drummond makes a lemon and yogurt sauce for the pita. You can find the complete ingredients and directions in the video above.
