Ree Drummond shares her empty nest plans

Ree Drummond shared some of what’s in store for her and Ladd once their youngest son, Todd, heads off to college.

Drummond told People they are planning to do some traveling, switching it up a bit beyond their usual annual vacations to Colorado.

“Ladd and I, we look forward to someday traveling a little bit,” she said. “We really haven’t done that beyond just going to Colorado for a week in the summer, but we’d like to actually travel places in the world sometime.”

Ree and Ladd Drummond took fans along on their last trip

Drummond shared the fun of her last Colorado trip with fans on Instagram and her website, giving people a peek at her vacation. She even revealed a fact about her husband she said “rocked me to my core.”

It wasn’t a total dealbreaker, luckily. In July 2021, Drummond shared the details about one snack during their road trip they didn’t agree on: jerky.

Drummond brought along a tender soft variety of beef jerky and Ladd wasn’t having it. She told all in a blog post on The Pioneer Woman site. “You’d think you’d know a person after 25 years of marriage. Their likes, dislikes, preferences, idiosyncrasies, opinions, desires, and beliefs,” she wrote. “But during our nine-hour drive to our marital vacation in Colorado Saturday, I discovered something about my spouse that has rocked me to my core.”

She added, “Ladd doesn’t like the same kind of beef jerky I like. And he feels really strongly about it.”

Ladd told her, “It’s not jerky. Your jerky… is juicy.”

“Jerky should be dry, Ladd said, and you should have to tear it with your teeth and chew on it for a good minute or two before you can begin to swallow it,” Drummond noted. “It makes me tired just thinking about it.”

They bought some of the tougher stuff at their next stop and Drummond said it was “actually pretty delicious,” despite all the extra effort to chew it.

Ree and Ladd Drummond moved into a smaller house

With their kids leaving the ranch, Ree and Ladd decided it was a good time to build a new, smaller home because their house had “foundation problems.”

“It wasn’t a charming 50-year-old house. We loved raising our kids in the house, but it had foundation problems and had developed a few problems that were going to be pretty overwhelming to fix,” she told People.

Their new house is next to the old house, however. “We packed our things and walked across the yard — it was so funny — and moved in,” she said.

They have plans to build another home and make the current one a guest house for the kids when they visit.

“When we build our main house, we’re only doing one or two bedrooms, so it’s not going to be a big mega house,” she explained. “But right now, we’re happy in the guest house. And this may be our ‘house, house’ for the time being. It’s very comfortable and again, simple. We had to be very selective about what we brought here.”
