The Real Reason Giada De Laurentiis Wouldn’t Speak to Bobby Flay
No matter what kind of TV show you’re into, there’s a special place in all of our hearts for the Food Network. From cooking competition shows to soothing instructions on how to entertain for friends, the programs on the network have proven to be fan favorites time and time again. And we’re all familiar with Italian chef Giada De Laurentiis and and superstar Bobby Flay, too. These two have starred in shows together and each have plenty of incredibly credentials of their own.
We’d never think the Food Network was very dramatic, but there was a time when Giada wouldn’t speak to Bobby Flay. Here’s why.
Giada stopped talking to Bobby when they lost Iron Chef America back in 2006
We can’t imagine anyone disliking either Giada or Bobby, as they both seem fun, joyous, and upbeat in personality. Giada has stated in the past, however, that there was a time when she refused to speak to Bobby. And her silence went on for a whopping eight months.
According to People, it all started when Giada and Bobby were paired together for Iron Chef America back in 2006. At the time, they were taking on team Rachael Ray and Mario Batali. Unfortunately, Bobby and Giada lost. As Giada told the Beyond the Plate podcast, “We lost and he thought it was funny. He didn’t think it was any big deal that we lost. I did not talk to him for eight months‚ eight months! I did not. Nothing. Silence.” While she claimed she put her all into the competition, it seemed as if Bobby and Mario didn’t care if they won or lost because they’d been competing on the show for so long. “It was just TV [to him]. I took it very seriously. I think Rachael took it very seriously, and I was really disappointed,” she added.
Rumors of a hook-up may have caused tension in the past
We remember when Giada used to mention her ex-husband, Todd, on her Food Network programs — but those days are long over. Todd Thompsonn and Giada filed for divorce back in 2014 after 11 years of marriage, E! News reports. Of course, rumors were flying as to what could have happened between the two — and that’s when talk of cheating also began to circulate.
E! News reports Star magazine wrote a story claiming Giada cheated on Todd with multiple famous folks like John Mayer and, of course, Bobby Flay. Giada had something to say about the rumors, however. “I have never ever been romantically involved with John Mayer. I met him twice at least 5 or 6 years ago at public events along with hundreds of other people. … The allegation of an affair was a fabrication back in 2010 and remains so today.” As for Bobby, she said, “My long-time friendships with my co-workers … are exactly that — long-time friendships. There has never been a romantic relationship.”
Today, the two are best friends
After the Iron Chef loss, Giada notes there was even more tension between her and Bobby because of his lack of a sincere apology, People notes. “He didn’t say, ‘Hey I’m sorry that we lost,’ or ‘Hey, you know we’ll do it again.’ Nothing. He’s just like walked away and I thought, you’re a jerk and I’m never — I never want to be around you again.” Thankfully, all of that tension was (relatively) short-lived.
Though her silence lasted nearly a year, Giada has remarked on her wonderful friendship with Bobby since then despite the Iron Chef America anger and whatever rumors have also gotten out of hand. In terms of their relationship, she said, “I think that Bobby is one of those people that if you are his friend, he has your back forever and he will stand up for you. He’s one of those guys you can call in a pinch and he will get you out of it. He’s special in that sense.”
