The Real Reason Serena Williams Throws Her Daughter a Party Even Though They Don’t Celebrate Birthdays
Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, have been very open about their Jehovah Witness faith.
Since welcoming their daughter, Olympia, in 2017, the couple has been adamant on sticking with their faith and not celebrate birthdays.
Even though they are not big on birthdays, Serena Williams decided to throw her one-year-old daughter a party, just because.
Olympia’s Candy Shop
On February 16, Olympic Gold Medalist, Serena Williams, and her husband gave their daughter her very first party.
The 37-year-old tennis champion took to Instagram Stories to share that having a party on a day that isn’t your birthday is just as fun!
The party was held in the couple’s backyard and had a carnival theme. Complete with a merry-go-round, bounce house, a train, and Olympia’s very own candy shop station.
The event was attended by close family and friends and everyone had a great time playing and dancing along to Disney songs.
Serena Williams was even recorded singing along to “Something There” from Beauty & The Beast.
Alexis Ohanian even shared a few photos of his daughter from the party. One of which was a black and white photo of the little girl dress in her party dress with the caption, “OK, we’ll get some chickens & ducks.”
We’re guessing the carnival themed party had everything except a few farm animals.
Not only was this a “just because” party, but it was also way for Williams to take a breather away from training and focusing on spending the day seeing her daughter have some fun.
They just felt like having a party
Even though Olympia’s birthday was a few months ago, Serena William and Alexis Ohanian felt like doing something special for their little girl.
“I wanted to just do something fun because we don’t do birthdays,” said Williams.
The couple has been open about raising their daughter to not celebrate birthdays, Christmas, Easter, and other holidays that are believed to “displease God.”
In 2017, Serena Williams revealed how important her religion is to her and how she had gotten her husband to adopt her same faiths.
“Being a Jehovah’s Witness is important to me, but I’ve never really practiced it and have been wanting to get into it. Alexis didn’t grow up going to any church, but he’s really receptive and even takes the lead. He puts my needs first,” she said.
Even though birthday parties are not celebrated in the Ohanian household, that does not mean the family is against having fun.
Serena Williams has felt insecure
With Serena Williams being open about her Jehovah Witness faith, she has also confessed that she sometimes does not feel like a “good enough” parent.
Since giving birth to Olympia, Williams has shared her insecurites when it comes to motherhood and sometimes doesn’t know if she’ is doing the right things when it comes to raising her daughter.
“I always have these insecurities that I’m not good enough as a mom. We all go through these different emotions that we all don’t feel comfortable talking about. But I think we should,” Williams said.
Serena Williams is still trying to find a healthy work/life balance but has admitted doing so can be a little difficult.
With the help of her husband and other mothers out there, Serena Williams has revealed that she feels at ease knowing people are there to show her that she really is a good mother.
“When I missed Olympia’s walking, I posted about it and so many parents wrote in and said, ‘Don’t worry about it, I missed it too.’ I didn’t realise that it’s almost more normal to miss it than it is to make it. So I really kind of rely on everyone’s help out there. It’s been so, so amazing.”
