The Real Reason Why Chip and Joanna Gaines Don’t Have a TV
Chip and Joanna Gaines are one of the most fascinating couples on TV, gaining fame hosting Fixer Upper on HGTV. The duo is set to launch their own network with an array of new shows that are set to inspire their audience. Despite finding success on the small-screen, the famous couple doesn’t actually own a television set. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, the stars finally revealed why it is that they don’t have a TV in their home and how they watch their shows.
Chip and Joanna feature a TV on their show
The stars of Fixer Upper are returning to television in a new version of their successful renovation show now called Fixer Upper: Welcome Home. Discovery+ subscribers have been treated to a preview of the brand new Magnolia Network series that is expected to launch later this year.
In one of the episodes, Chip and Joanna help John transition from New York City to Waco, Texas, where he works for the Magnolia company. During the process of envisioning what his home would look like, John had only one thing in mind: he wanted to see his TV from his office.
“When I’m in this room, I would like to see the TV of my dreams,” John said while in the living room.
To make this vision happen, a wall had to be broken down that separated his office from his living room. In place of the wall, Joanna put in a window that served as a separator but also helped see through the wall. This also entailed the couple break one of their own rules from the show.
“First time in ‘Fixer’ history we’ve done….,” Joanna started to say during the reveal before being interrupted by Chip adding, “Don’t tell him, see if he can guess it….”
“Oh, I already know what it is. First time we’ve ever featured a television in a ‘Fixer Upper’ house.,” John said.
“And I did it for you,” Joanna added.
Why don’t Chip and Joanna Gaines own a TV?
Looking back at Fixer Upper, it’s true, it’s rare to see a TV set integrated into the designs created by Joanna. When the couple was a guest on Super Soul, they explained why they don’t own a television screen.
Joanna said that after doing an add-on to their home, she asked Chip if they could put a TV over their fireplace and the answer was negative.
“From the beginning, when we were engaged, we went to marriage counseling and they said, ‘Hey, we challenge you guys for six months, don’t get a TV, play cards, go on a walk…,” Joanna recalled.
Chip interjected and said, “They left it to us to say how long you can do it. Everybody said, a couple of weeks, a couple of months… We just came back instinctively and said we wanted to be without television for one year. We just thought it would be romantic.”
After going without a TV for one year, Chip said he looked at Joanna and said they should go one more year.
“The people that say it takes 21 days to form a habit… those people are liars,” Chip added. “It takes two years to form a habit, but I will say, after that second year, we’ve never looked back.”
With no TV at home, Chip and Joanna say they go over to a friend’s house to watch Fixer Upper. However, with the launch of discovery+ they are now able to watch themselves on their computer screen.
