A ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot Without Mr. Big Seems Closer To Darren Star’s Original Vision
Another blow has been dealt with And Just Like That, the Sex and the City reboot. Chris Noth, who portrayed Mr. Big for all six seasons of the show, will reportedly not return to reprise his role. The announcement comes weeks after the production team revealed that Kim Cattrall would not be reprising her role as Samantha Jones. The absence of Mr. Big might not sit well with fans of the original series but might be a hit with Sex and the City creator Darren Star. Star has openly criticized the end of the series for forcing Mr. Big and Carrie Bradshaw back together.
Chris Noth is reportedly not returning for And Just Like That, the Sex and the City Reboot
On Feb. 18, Page Six broke Sex and the City fans’ hearts when they reported Noth would not reprise his role as Mr. Big in the upcoming limited series. The publication didn’t mention how they learned that the actor was walking away from the franchise, and Noth hasn’t commented on his involvement just yet, so it isn’t exactly a done deal. Still, his absence would make a lot of sense.
Noth has been busy since wrapping up his role in Sex and the City. Currently, he’s starring alongside Queen Latifa in the Equalizer. Noth is also set to appear in two upcoming flicks. According to IMDb, he’ll appear in Brooklyn All American and Someday Sometime. Both films are in pre-production.
Darren Star once said that Sex and the City’s ending betrayed the series
In a Kindle Singles interview, Star admitted that he wasn’t a huge fan of how the series ended. He acknowledged that the entire storyline involving Mr. Big finally coming to his senses and going after Carrie pandered to the audience. After all, fans had been pining for the couple to work things out for years. When it happened, they were thrilled. Star, well, he had a different take.
The show creator said that he believes the ending betrayed what the series was ultimately about. The show wasn’t supposed to be about a woman chasing a man and finally nabbing him, like some contrived romantic comedy. He argued that the show was supposed to be about women who found fulfillment, regardless of their relationship status. When it finally went off the air, all four women had found their “forever” loves. If Carrie is, indeed, single again in And Just Like That, it could hit closer to how Star had initially envisioned the show’s ending.
Will the Sex and the City 3 movie script come into play for And Just Like That?
Noth’s absence from the reboot has some fans wondering if rumors about the script for Sex and the City 3 were true. In 2017, the cast of Sex and the City were set to begin filming a third movie, that is, until Cattrall reportedly pulled out at the last minute. The team behind the movie opted not to continue and scrapped the concept. Rumor has it that Mr. Big died in the script.
Now, fans are wondering if that storyline will somehow come into play for the limited series. Right now, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Michael Patrick King, the show’s executive producer, is currently working with a writing team to develop original content. Mr. Big’s demise has not been mentioned as a potential plot point. At least, not yet.
