The day Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles she became a real princess and to the rest of the world, it seemed that she was destined to live a fairy tale. Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out that way and her story had a tragic ending.

The Prince and Princess of Wales tied the knot on July 29, 1981, but right around the time they said “I do,” Diana learned that Charles was still seeing his ex-Camilla Parker Bowles. Diana later spoke about how the extramarital affair caused her so much torment. She and Charles separated in 1992 and eventually divorced in 1996. One year later, the princess died following a car crash in Paris. More than two decades after her untimely death, people are still fascinated and shocked by what Diana was actually doing and going through behind palace walls.

Here’s more of the startling revelations from Diana’s secret tapes including the truly shocking thing she did while she was pregnant with Prince William.

Diana struggled with an eating disorder for years

The princess struggled with bulimia nervosa, which is when binge eating occurs and is followed by purging.

According to Diana, her eating disorder started after she and Prince Charles got engaged and he made a remark about her figure.

She recalled him touching her waist and saying, “Oh, a bit chubby here, aren’t we?” The princess added that the comment “triggered off something in me.”

In her audio recordings, Diana also said that Queen Elizabeth II knew about her bulimia and “told everybody that was the reason why our marriage had cracked up, because of Diana’s eating, and it must be so difficult for Charles.”

It wasn’t just an eating disorder, Diana also struggled with depression and tried to harm herself on a number of occasions. One time she admitted to cutting herself with Charles’ penknife.

“He wouldn’t listen to me. So I picked up his penknife off his dressing table and scratched myself heavily down my chest and both thighs,” the princess said. “There was a lot of blood — and he hadn’t made any reaction whatsoever.”

Then, in another desperate attempt to get her husband’s attention, Diana revealed that she threw herself down a flight of stairs while she was four months pregnant with Prince William.

“I had told Charles I felt so desperate and I was crying my eyes out. He said I was crying wolf. ‘I’m not going to listen,’ he said. ‘You’re always doing this to me. I’m going riding now.’ So I threw myself down the stairs,” Diana confessed. “The queen comes out, absolutely horrified, shaking — she was so frightened.”

The princess said that while she did have some bruising around her tummy from the fall she “knew I wasn’t going to lose the baby.”
