Many horror movies are scary because of how real they often feel. The unsuspecting victim (or victims) often begin the movie living their normal, day-to-day life before getting caught up in a terrifying story. What’s often scarier is that these stories take place and are filmed in regular homes and not big Hollywood sound stages. The 1991 classic The Silence of the Lambs stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, and maintained its sense of reality because of its connection to everyday America.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ was a hit movie

The Silence of the Lambs became a classic movie almost immediately upon its release. The characters of Clarice Sterling and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (played by Foster and Hopkins respectively) have become some of the most timeless characters in Hollywood.

At the 1992 Oscars, the film achieved another accomplishment that only a handful of films have ever done. Both Foster and Hopkins won the Academy Award for Best Actor and Best Actress, making The Silence of the Lambs one of only seven films to do so. The film ended up making over $270 million worldwide.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ house is for sale

The Silence of the Lambs takes viewers into the twisted mind of a serial killer named Buffalo Bill who skins his female victims alive and wears their bodies as coats. Foster’s character Clarice is charged with tracking Buffalo Bill down and bringing him to justice.

Like many scary movies, The Silence of the Lambs utilized real-world homes as a way of illustrating how horrific Buffalo Bill is. Now, just in time for Halloween, one lucky (or unlucky) fan can experience the movie for themself.

Located in Perryopolis, Pennsylvania, the three-story Princess Anne Victorian home that Buffalo Bill lived in is on the market. The house has four bedrooms and one bathroom and sits on nearly two acres of land on the Youghiogheny River. And it can be all yours for $298,500.

Other scary movie homes are occupied today

The Silence of the Lambs is just one of many movies where the home it was filmed in still stands today. In fact, many houses are occupied by families today.

The home that was the basis of The Amityville Horror still stands today, though it’s changed owners several times since the murders of 1974 and the haunting stories in the years afterward. The entire façade of the house (including its infamous “eye windows”) has been changed as well as the numerical address to get rid of any association with its spooky past.

The Nightmare on Elm Street didn’t take place on Elm Street or in Ohio at all, but rather in a swanky area of Hollywood. It went on the market in 2013 for over $2 million after a gut renovation. In 2015, the San Diego home where Paranormal Activity was filmed was quickly snatched up for $750,000.
