‘The Suicide Squad’: Margot Robbie Slept in a Room With a Cardboard Cut-out of John Cena For 2 Years
Outside of Snyder’s Cut, DC Films has had a relatively quiet year. However, many DC Comics lovers are excited to see the studio’s upcoming movie, The Suicide Squad. The film features an all-star cast that includes Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis, among others.
Cena, who is known for his days as a professional wrestler in the WWE, is one of the newest additions to the DC universe. However, he has an odd connection to Robbie, who has starred in several prior DC Films.
As strange as it might sound, Robbie slept in a room with a cardboard cut-out of Cena long before she ever met him.
‘Suicide Squad’ star Margot Robbie loved watching WWE growing up
Robbie revealed that she was a big WWE fan in her earlier years during a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live!
“I watched WWE when I was growing up. When I was a kid I loved the Undertaker,” she said. “And then, obviously, when I was a teenager, I kinda stopped watching.”
Her ex-boyfriend was obsessed with John Cena
Even though Robbie’s interest in the WWE waned by the time she was a teenager, one of her previous boyfriends maintained a passion for professional wrestling. He loved Cena and wasn’t afraid to show it, either.
“But then, as a late teen, early 20s, I had a boyfriend who was obsessed with John Cena,” she said. “So much so, that he dressed as John Cena for his 21st birthday.
Margot Robbie had to sleep in a room with a cardboard cut-out of John Cena
Robbie’s former boyfriend’s love for Cena ran so deep that he kept a cardboard cut-out of the former WWE champion in his room for several years, which freaked Robbie out at times.
“And he had a cardboard cutout of John Cena in his bedroom,” she said. “So I slept in a room for two years with a life-sized cardboard cut-out of John Cena in the room. And sometimes, I’d wake up in the middle of the night and be like [gasps], and then I was like, ‘Oh, it’s just John Cena, it’s ok.’”
She couldn’t wait to tell John Cena when they first met
Things came full-circle when Robbie connected with Cena while working on The Suicide Squad, but she initially wasn’t sure if it would be cool to bring up the backstory.
“I remember thinking, ‘I wonder if — now that I’m gonna work with John Cena — should I tell him this, or is that gonna be weird?’” she said. “And I thought, ‘I’m just gonna keep that to myself, I’m not gonna tell him, that’d be a weird way to start out a working relationship and friendship.”
Despite her reservations, Robbie wasted no time telling Cena about her ex-boyfriend’s obsession.
“And then five seconds into meeting him, I was like, ‘I used to sleep in a room with a life-sized cut-out of you,” she said. “But now I know that there’s very little to weird out this guy.”
The Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 6.
