The coming-of-age romance is based on Jenny Han’s book series of the same name. If the author’s name sounds familiar, it should: Han penned the trilogy on which the hugely popular To All The Boys I Loved Before Netflix movies are based.
The Summer I Turned Pretty follows the story of a teenager nicknamed Belly, who spends every summer at the beach with her mother, her mother’s best friend, and her two sons. Belly had a longtime crush on one brother, Conrad, but as the summer progresses, she also feels drawn to the other brother, Jeremiah.
In addition to the teenage romance, the books — and the new TV series — explore how relationships between mothers and their children change over the years and the power of strong female friendship.
The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 1 follows the story of the first book. Belly deals with her feelings toward the brothers she grew up spending summers with, a budding romance with another boy, and Conrad and Jeremiah’s mother’s health crisis and impending divorce from their father.
Belly has to choose which boy truly has her heart, even as Conrad — the one she’s had a crush on for years — insists he’s not good for her and will only hurt her. By the end of the first season — spoiler alert! — Belly and Conrad admit their feelings for each other but end the summer as friends.

So, what can fans expect from The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2? Spoilers ahead!
The second book in the series, It’s Not Summer Without You, sees the group mourning the death of Conrad’s and Jeremiah’s mother earlier that year.
They don’t return to their beach house, but Belly receives a call from Jeremiah saying Conrad has disappeared. He asks her to go on a road trip to help him find his brother before he misses his summer school exams and fails the semester.
Belly and Jeremiah find Conrad at the beach house, but the three are heartbroken to discover that the brothers’ father plans to sell the beloved summer home. The teens throw one last party, and romantic tensions come to a head as Jeremiah still has feelings for Belly.
After helping Conrad cram for his exams and driving him back to school to take his tests, Belly and Jeremiah have a heart-to-heart, and the two kiss. Conrad sees them, and he and Belly argue.
After realizing Conrad will never be able to say he loves her, Belly decides he will never care about her the way she wants. So she chooses Jeremiah.
What will ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 2 be about?
It’s unknown how closely the show will follow the book’s storyline, but Han and the show’s star, Lola Tung, are excited to see where the series goes.
“I’m looking forward to seeing other seasons — literal seasons,” the author told Today. “All you see is summertime now. There’s a lot more road to hoe, and we’ll get to see [Belly’s] world a bit bigger.”
Tung, who plays Belly, echoed these statements, saying she’s “excited to see how the relationships evolve and how the characters continue to grow.”
Amazon Prime Video hasn’t announced a release date for The Summer I Turned Pretty Season 2 yet. But fans eagerly await the next installment in the love triangle of Belly, Conrad, and Jeremiah.
