One factor that has possibly contributed to their successful relationship is their habit of unplugging and going on family vacations from time to time — and their destination of choice is also decidedly non-Hollywood.

Shepard and Bell first crossed paths in 2007 at a birthday party. But they didn’t really get to spend time together until a few months later, at a hockey game that featured their mutual favorite team: the Red Wings.
Both Shepard and Bell hail from the state of Michigan, and they found that they had plenty in common while at the game. They started dating shortly after that and soon became a fixture at events and red carpets all over Hollywood.
Shepard and Bell got engaged in late 2009 and welcomed their first child, daughter Lincoln Bell, in March 2013. Only a few months later, the couple tied the knot in a simple courthouse ceremony. In December 2014, they had another child, a girl that they named Delta Bell.
Over the years, they have discussed their imperfect relationship, including the fact that they have gone to couples therapy in order to work through rough patches. Shepard has also struggled with addiction and gives a lot of credit to his wife for helping him to maintain his sobriety.
Most recently, they started a business together, a line of baby products called Hello Bello. Fans everywhere love Shepard and Bell, mainly for their realism and humor regarding everyday situations.

Most Hollywood couples prefer to jet away to exotic beaches or luxurious European saunas when they need a vacation. Not Shepard and Bell.
In fact, they prefer getting away to their home state of Michigan every year, bringing their young daughters along with them. While on vacation, they do enjoy some chill time, but also like to get active by participating in water sports, including swimming and kayaking.
Bell revealed in an interview that the reason why they prefer to escape to Michigan is that she and Shepard “really wanted our kids to experience some time on a Michigan lake like we did growing up.” Not only did the vacations help their kids, but Bell admitted that returning home to Michigan every year helps her marriage get stronger as well. Therefore, the family makes it an annual tradition.

Although the couple has not revealed where exactly they stay when in Michigan, they have talked about a few of their favorite haunts. Shepard is a big fan of the restaurant Highland House, where he always orders the pasta and breadsticks, and the whole family loves Lafayette Coney Island.
As for Bell, although she generally prefers to avoid alcohol, she feels comfortable enough when in Michigan to unwind and enjoy a glass or two of sweet wine.
The low-key couple might live a life in the spotlight when in California, but when they retreat to Michigan, it’s all about staying low-key. It is clear that their commitment to family time helps to keep their marriage going strong, even when many other Hollywood relationships have failed.
