The Surprising Reason Why Kim Cattrall Will Never Work on ‘Sex and the City’ Again
Sex and the City depicts a perfect friendship between four, adult women in Manhattan. The show romanticizes the glamour, the bustle, and the life of city dwellers Miranda, Samantha, Carrie, and Charlotte. However, upon deeper inspection, the relationships between the actresses portraying the friends might not have been so smooth. Kim Cattrall, who plays Samantha, has decided that she will never work on a Sex and the City project again.
‘Sex and the City’ was a long-running, fan-favorite
Sex and the City was on the air from 1998 to 2004, and can still be watched in a series of reruns or on binged on Amazon Prime or Hulu. The show has over 90 episodes which detail the everyday lives of its stars, from the perspective of a journalist, Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. Set and filmed in New York City, the HBO success focused on the social lives of four very different women.
Sex and the City is the inspiration for two films featuring the same characters. Sex and the City: The Movie occurs four years after the ending of the show and details the events that lead up to, and happen directly after, Carrie is left at the alter by Mr. Big. Its sequel, Sex and the City 2, features the girls on a trip to Abu Dhabi while they juggle the responsibilities of career, motherhood and aging gracefully.
There was a third movie in the works, one of which the script was already written and was rumored to detail the aftermath of Carrie’s heartbreak from Mr. Big’s untimely death. However, Parker has said she will not create the movie without all four actresses, and Cattrall will not commit to another film.
A rift between the ‘Sex and the City’ castmates
Apparently, ever since the early days of the show there have been rumors of fighting among the show’s four leads. In the 2004 Emmy awards, actresses Parker, Nixon, and Davis all sat together for the ceremony. Cattrall sat on the other side of the room, by herself. In response to questions about their separation, Cattrall said: “Are we the best of friends? No. We’re professional actresses. We have our own separate lives.”
By October of 2017, Cattrall was telling interviewers that she had never been friends with her Sex and the City costars and that she would certainly not do the third movie with them.
It’s unclear if their feuding was over the money or if the issue was simply women being cliquey in their friendship choices. But, either way, there is so bad blood. Whenever Cattrall is asked about returning for another movie she answers with a firm no. A “no” that is getting louder all the time.
“Never. It’s a no from me,” the actress told the Daily Mail when asked about another movie. “You learn lessons in life and my lesson is to do work with good people and try and make it fun.”
Kim Cattrall made it clear she won’t be back
In December 2016, Cattrall explained her decision to stay away from the Sex and the City franchise for good. “The answer was simply thank you, but no, I’m good,” she said. “This isn’t about more money. It’s not about more scenes.”
It had been often speculated that part of her displeasure at the show was the lack of compensation the three, lesser characters received and the way in which her character did not mature and develop like the others.
She insisted in her statement: “This is about a clear decision, an empowered decision in my life to end one chapter and start another… It’s a great part. I played it past the finish line and then some, and I loved it.”
During an interview with Piers Morgan in 2017, Cattrall said of the third movie: “Not for me. That was part of turning 60. That was a very clear moment of how many years do I have left and what do I want to do with it? What haven’t I done? I feel that the show was the best when it was the series and the bonus was the two movies.”
Since it is obvious that she doesn’t find her co-stars to be “good people,” Cattrall is moving on with her life in search of positivity and love. Although she has a few other projects she’s been working on, it isn’t likely she’ll find something as powerfully loved as Sex and the City was by fans.
