In the past decade, networks have replicated the formula first pioneered by The View in the late ’90s: a panel of five-ish different women discussing the events of the day. The Talk premiered in 2010, and comedian Sheryl Underwood has been with the show for a decade now.

Sheryl Underwood’s career before ‘The Talk’

Sheryl Underwood wasn’t always on the track to become a famous comedian. After she graduated college, she joined the US Air Force reserves and served for two years. She later transitioned to performing comedy.

Underwood was a comedian for many years before she became a talk show host. She first emerged on the comedy circuit in 1989 when she won the Miller Lite Comedy Search, a competition that put other stars on the map including Bernie Mac and Cedric the Entertainer.

Underwood’s profile as a comedian continued to grow throughout the ’90s and ’00s. She hosted the BET stand-up comedy show ComicView in the mid-2000s (something Cedric the Entertainer did a decade before) and was a radio personality for several years.

Underwood is also an alumna of the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta, and in 2008, she became the first professional entertainer to be elected president of a nationally recognized Black fraternity or sorority.

Sheryl Underwood has been on ‘The Talk’ since 2011

The Talk brought on Underwood as a co-host in its second season in 2011. As a Black Republican, Underwood has provided unique commentary throughout the decade that she’s been on the show.

Underwood has been at the center of The Talk‘s ongoing controversy surrounding Sharon Osbourne and her history of using racist and homophobic language on set. Underwood questioning her co-host about her support of Piers Morgan and his racist comments was what set off the firestorm that began live on the air and continued behind the scenes.
