The Time Ryan Gosling Was a Real-Life Hero
Ryan Gosling has made a name for himself for his acting versatility. He rose to fame as a young heartthrob, acting in romantic comedies and dramas, but quickly proved that he has the ability to portray any role — including tough, action-packed characters like the one he portrayed in Blade Runner 2049.
These days, Gosling is as big of a star as he was in the early 2000s, although he chooses to live much of his life well away from the prying eyes of the public. Still, Gosling steps in when he feels he is needed, and a few years ago, the actor made headlines when he saved a woman from a speeding taxi.
How did Ryan Gosling become a Hollywood star?
Gosling was born in Ontario, Canada, in 1980. Raised in a working-class family, Gosling had a difficult time in middle school and high school and turned to his dreams of becoming an actor to help him get through the days.
Eventually, Gosling dropped out of public school because of the bullying that he experienced, with his mother stepping in to homeschool him. In early 1993, Gosling tried out for the show The All-New Mickey Mouse Club. He landed a spot, and for several years, he flexed his muscles as a child star on the series.
By the early 2000s, Gosling had started to appear in larger roles in film projects. A few of his early movie parts included featured roles in Murder by Numbers, The Slaughter Rule, and The United States of Leland.
Ryan Gosling is best known for romantic dramas like ‘The Notebook’
Gosling broke through Hollywood big time in 2004 when he played Noah in the romance epic The Notebook. Gosling became an instant star, and fans couldn’t get enough of his chemistry with his co-star, Rachel McAdams.
His success in the film led to him getting a series of other high-profile roles, including Half Nelson, Lars and the Real Girl, Blue Valentine, and La La Land.
In addition to his work as an actor, Gosling has played in a band and embarked on several lucrative business ventures. He is in a longtime relationship with actress Eva Mendes, welcoming two daughters, whom they work hard to keep out of the spotlight.
These days, Gosling is very choosy about his projects, selecting roles that challenge him creatively.
When did Ryan Gosling save a woman from a speeding car?
Gosling has played many heroic characters onscreen — but in his private life, he has also proven himself to be a bit of a hero as well. Most notably, in 2012, Gosling made headlines when he stepped in to save a British journalist from a speeding taxi.
“I literally, LITERALLY just got saved from a car by Ryan Gosling. Literally. That actually just happened,” Laurie Penny tweeted only seconds after Gosling had saved her from the oncoming vehicle.
Still, Gosling remained understated about his role in saving Penny’s life. The journalist did open up in the days that followed the incident, penning an op-ed where she compared the experience to “being in a cheesy film,” while simultaneously stating that she believes the stories of Gosling heroically saving her life tended to be a bit overstated — since, as she wrote, “people do lovely, considerate things for other people all the time.”
