The new Ariana Grande era has begun. The 27-year-old pop star dropped the first single from her sixth studio album on Oct. 23. Titled “Positions,” the track is an R&B love song that’s seemingly about her current boyfriend, Dalton Gomez. But the true meaning behind Ariana Grande’s “Positions” lyrics goes deeper than just her love for her man.

Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’ dropped Oct. 23

The “Break Free” singer released the first single from her highly anticipated album the same night as the last presidential debate, which was fitting timing, given that the music video features Grande as the President of the United States with a cabinet comprised of her closest confidantes, including her mother, Joan Grande. It’s iconic.

In the song, the star croons about this relationship having her happily doing things to make her partner feel loved.

“Heaven sent you to me,” she sings in the first verse. “I’m just hopin’ I don’t repeat history.”

In the pre-chorus, Grande sings, “Boy, I’m tryna meet your mama on a Sunday / Then make a lotta love on a Monday (Ah, ah) / Never need no (No), no one else, babe / ‘Cause I’ll be.” The chorus details how happy she is to dote on her partner.

“Switchin’ the positions for you,” she sing. “Cookin’ in the kitchen and I’m in the bedroom / I’m in the Olympics, way I’m jumpin’ through hoops / Know my love infinite, nothin’ I wouldn’t do / That I won’t do, switchin’ for you.”

Ariana Grande sings about doting on her partner in ‘Positions’

She sings about being willing to do anything for her relationship, and that’s juxtaposed with the music video showing her in the highest position in the land. With that, Grande is sending the message that a woman can be successful, in power, and independent and still be capable of nurturing a positive relationship. It’s less of a “Women really can have it all!” vibe and more of a, “Well, yeah, obviously. Why did you even doubt that?”

She’ll put as much hard work into her relationship as she puts into her career, because her relationship makes her feel so good. And she’ll do it with ease. With this song, Grande’s basically saying, “My life is very fulfilling, and I choose to add you to it because you make the joy runneth over.”
