The Umbrella Academy premiered on Netflix in 2019 and quickly became one of the streaming platform’s most popular shows. Based on those created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, the characters make the show a standout, but the soundtrack also shines. The seemingly odd choice of songs juxtaposed with certain scenes creates a series with plenty of memorable moments. Let’s look at some of the best musical moments involving the Hargreeves siblings.

Tiffany’s ‘I Think We’re Alone Now’ in ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 1

The five members of The Umbrella Academy dancing it out to the popular ‘80s tune “I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tiffany is one of the most iconic moments in the series. The scene happens early in season 1 episode 1 when the Hargreeves return to their childhood home for their father’s funeral. None of the children remember their father all that fondly, and their relationships with one another remain tense.

However, when Allison discovers her old Tiffany album, she immediately places it on the record player. While the song reverberates through the giant house, viewers watch as each person in The Umbrella Academy dances along in separate rooms. It’s not a particularly happy scene, so the overly peppy tune provides a strange soundtrack, but it works as one of the best The Umbrella Academy musical moments.

Allison battles it out to the sounds of the Backstreet Boys

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 starts with all of the Hargreeves spread out over Texas in different years. When Five helped everyone time-jump in the season 1 finale, he made no guarantees they’d end up in the same place. They did not. However, throughout the season, the siblings make it back to one another as they try to thwart yet another apocalypse caused by Vanya.

During Klaus’ time in Texas, he managed to start a cult by pawning off song lyrics from the present-day as his own wise words. When The Umbrella Academy had their chance to make it back to their timeline, Klaus left his cult with these words, “Oh my god, we’re back again. Brothers, sisters, everybody sing. We’re gonna bring you the flavor; we’re gonna show you how.”

As he talks, the sounds of “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” start to play. The scene then cuts to Allison as she fights off the villainous Swedes. No doubt an odd choice for a fight scene, but it certainly stands out to fans of the show.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ Season 1 plays ‘S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y’ amidst a rain of bullets

When fans reach the end of The Umbrella Academy Season 1, the Hargreeves have figured out it’s their sister Vanya who causes the apocalypse. When the siblings must come up with a plan to stop Vanya from ending the world, they decide the best place to do so is in a local bowling alley. Never mind the child’s birthday party happening just a few lanes over. When assassins from The Commission show up intending to take out all members of The Umbrella Academy, gunfire erupts.

Allison decides their best chance at escape uses the end of the lanes as an exit. With Bay City Rollers’ “Saturday Night” blaring over the speakers, the Hargreeves dash down the bowling lanes and dive into the pins. It’s fun, peppy, and the exact opposite of the type of music most would expect to play during a gunfight. However, The Umbrella Academy makes it work and cements it as one of the best musical scenes in the series.

Fans can expect to catch up with the Hargreeves when The Umbrella Academy Season 3 premieres on June 22, 2022.
