‘The Umbrella Academy’ and ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Have Something in Common
Based on the award-winning graphic novel by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is a Netflix original series about an estranged family of superheroes who are reunited when they learn about the impending apocalypse. On the other hand, Schitt’s Creek is a Pop TV sitcom about a wealthy family who find themselves completely broke — their only remaining asset being the small town of Schitt’s Creek.
Both shows are essentially about family, and both shows were filmed in Canada, but The Umbrella Academy and Schitt’s Creek also have something else in common.
The Rosebud Motel
Schitt’s Creek tells the tale of formerly wealthy Johnny Rose (Eugene Levy), who must uproot his wife, Moira (Catherine O’Hara), and two children after their business manager scams them out of a fortune. Their one remaining asset — the nowhere town of Schitt’s Creek that they had purchased as a joke — comes with a vacant motel that they’re forced to call home.
As they start to rebuild their lives, they learn that Schitt’s Creek isn’t as bad as they had initially thought. The former video store mogul eventually invests in the motel with newfound friend Stevie Budd, and together they rename it the Rosebud Motel.
The Rosebud Motel is featured in ‘The Umbrella Academy’
The Umbrella Academy takes place in an nondescript metropolis that features iconic locations Toronto natives can quickly point out. But one Reddit user noticed the show also features a landmark familiar to Schitt’s Creek fans. The Rosebud is the same motel that Umbrella Academy assassin Hazel (Cameron Britton) and his lady love, Agnes (Sheila McCarthy), seek refuge within.
When Hazel decides to put his days of time-traveling assassinations behind him, he and Agnes hide out in a nicely appointed motel room that mimics the ones seen in Schitt’s Creek. Though, the famed lodge is in visibly better shape in The Umbrella Academy than what we see in Schitt’s Creek’s Rosebud.
Dan Levy, the creator of Schitt’s Creek and actor who plays the role of David Rose, confirmed that the motel seen in The Umbrella Academy was in fact the Rosebud.
The Rosebud isn’t the only recycled location used in the first season of The Umbrella Academy. The cabin in the woods where Ellen Page’s character, Vanya, attempts to get a hold of her newfound powers can be seen in another Netflix original, Polar starring Mads Mikkelsen and Vanessa Hudgens.

Since being featured in these well-known series, the Rosebud Motel/Umbrella Academy hideaway has become something of a tourist destination. Located an hour outside of Toronto, fans of both shows travel from far and wide to get a glimpse of the famous property.
