‘The Umbrella Academy’ Cast on Sir Reginald Hargreeves’ Identity
Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy places the Hargreeves children — once again — up against an impending apocalypse. Doomsday is coming, and they’ve got to save the world and get back to 2019, all without tinkering with the space-time continuum to an irreversible and consequential extent. The second season packs in surprising, yet inevitable moments, leading to quite the cliffhanger of a finale.

The end of Season 2 presents quite the twist concerning Papa Hargreeves
Toward the end of the second season, Reginald Hargreeves pulls off a face mask — in a Mission Impossible–esque fashion — to reveal an alien-type, sort of wet and amphibian-like head. In other words, it becomes quite apparent that Sir Reginald Hargreeves is not a human at all. Is he from another planet? If so, which one?
Is Reginald Hargreeves working independently, or has he been sent from outer space on a mission to collect data, and assemble a group of heroes for an ulterior motive beyond altruism and the preservation of humanity?
‘The Umbrella Academy’ cast talks about the Reginald Hargreeves reveal in season 2
During an interview with ETonline, members of The Umbrella Academy cast responded to questions concerning Reginald and who he might be. When asked if he’s an alien, Ellen Page responded:
It looks like he might be. It looks like that could be the case. I absolutely loved that twist and how it was done. What a thing to pull off in a way that feels rounded and really effects you.

Robert Sheehan has no hesitations in claiming that Reginald Hargreeves is an alien. He stated:
Of course he is. I didn’t think they were going to go that literal with the space-alien thing. But I go “Yeah, baby!” We got the nice audience now, let’s camp it up, let’s go a bit graphic novel.

The cast also explained what they think the plan is for season 3, especially with concern to this surprising twist. David Castañeda, who plays Diego, explained that he believes season 3 will “dive into” Reginald, and illuminate a bit.
Aidan Gallagher (number 5) explains that the show will likely keep more a secret than they reveal, dropping little hints and “easter eggs” without ever giving the full picture, which seems like a move the writers behind the show would make.
Gallagher explains that enough will be present for fans to pick up on, yet not too much that the character’s entire motive and reason for existence comes into the light. In short, season 3 may raise more questions concerning Reginald than it answers, as Gallagher explains.
